Norma Helen Woodman, 93, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on June 29, 1932, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Norma dedicated her life to creating a nurturing home for her husband of 55 years, Kenneth, and their six children.
Norma grew up in Winnipeg and completed her high school diploma at Kelvin High School in 1949. From time to time, she was known to skip a class or two to go horseback riding on a warm, sunny afternoon. Norma loved horses and shared this passion with her three daughters.
As a young nurse in her early twenties, Norma met the love of her life, Ken, on the wards of the old Winnipeg General Hospital. They were married on December 28, 1954, and two years later welcomed the first of their six children. Norma devoted the next two decades to raising their family on Balsam Crescent in Brandon, Manitoba. She encouraged her children to participate in the many activities offered in Brandon and was always busy taxiing them from one place to another.
Norma returned to nursing in the mid-1970s as an ICU nurse and later joined Ken as his dermatology nurse at Station 8 in the Brandon Clinic. Together, they shared many exciting adventures around the world. After retiring from the Brandon Clinic, they spent two years in New Zealand, working at Southland Hospital in Invercargill, before returning to Canada in 1992.
Norma was active in her community throughout her life. A devoted Anglican, her faith was strong and inspiring. She attended St. Matthew’s Cathedral regularly and volunteered for many years with the Altar Guild. She cherished her weekly bridge games and the friendships that blossomed with her bridge partners. Norma also gave generously of her time to organizations such as the Nearly New Shop and Samaritan House, and she was a long-time member of the Brandon Chapter of the Taoist Tai Chi Society.
Norma infused her home with music and culture, inspiring her children and grandchildren to embrace a love of music in their own lives. Her joy for music and theatre led her to sing in her beloved St. Matthew’s Cathedral choir, perform in several Mecca productions, and lend her voice to the Women in Harmony choir.
Norma is survived by her six children: Patti (Richard Hooker), David (Margie Saunders), Jim (Margaret Kampf), Bart (Deborah Yacheson), Sharon (Marc Cormier), and Susan (David Hunter); her fifteen grandchildren: Katie (Clayton Feick), Laura (Darcy Greenham), Sydney (Joel Carlton), David, Anna (Lee LaRay), Frances, Grace, Ellen, Camila, Jasmine, Luc, Joelle, Reid (Erica Scott), Claire, and Nate; and her four great-grandchildren: Audrey, Knox, Giorgia, and Harper. She is also survived by her niece Jean Bell (Bruce) and nephew Charlie Fox (Diane) and their families from beautiful British Columbia.
A service will be held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral on October 25, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Norma may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation – Western Manitoba Cancer Care Program, 150 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3, or to Samaritan House Ministries, 820 Pacific Avenue, Brandon, MB R7A 0J1.
