Jeanette Catagas “Falling Star Woman” passed away peacefully at her residence, Rideau Park Personal Care Home, in Brandon, MB on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at the age of 84 years.
She was born in Valley River Indian Reserve, (known as Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve), on June 21, 1941, to Roseanne Amyotte and John Alexander Catagas. Jeanette lived in Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve with her parents and siblings, Nellie, Margaret, Evelyn, David, Ernest and Mervin. In her formative years, Jeanette attended an Indian Residential School; this experience challenged her emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
She met her husband, Gerald Ironstand and together they had eight children, Arnold, Chester, Anthony, Lorraine, Norma, Dawna, Eunice and Vicki. Jeanette eventually moved to Brandon. During her younger years, she worked primarily as a care provider to the Elderly, and as a housekeeper.
After retirement, she attended classes so she could keep her literacy and math skills current. Jeanette loved to go for long walks; she could be seen walking down Princess Avenue to meet up with friends for coffee at the Town Centre. She loved to go shopping and often gave away her finds to friends and family. She was a kind woman, with a unique sense of humour and she loved to laugh. She enjoyed playing scrabble and cards. Her favorite games were cribbage and crazy eights. She loved to say, "You can't beat this old woman!" after winning a game. After she moved into a personal care home, she settled into a comfortable routine. She participated in many activities; she liked doing crafts and "helping staff bake muffins". She played Bingo and enjoyed outings like going for ice cream. She loved to listen to music, especially Willie Nelson (Always on my mind) and Hank Williams (Your cheating heart). The staff loved to tease her and called her "Boss" and "Queen". She always had a little chuckle about that.
Her family would like to acknowledge the staff at Rideau Park Personal care home for the love and compassionate care they provided to her during her stay.
She is in the spirit world in the loving presence of the Creator with her mom, dad, husband and her sons. She will be greatly missed.
She was predeceased by her parents Roseanne and Alex, her husband Gerald, her siblings Nellie, Margaret, Evelyn, David, and Ernest and her beloved sons Chester and Anthony.
Jeanette is survived by her brother Mervin Catagas (Mildred); her children, Arnold Catagas (Celina), Lorraine Messing (Juergen), Norma Catagas (Rich), Dawna Catagas, Eunice Jordan, and Vicki Catagas; her grandchildren Jeremy, Ramona, Leslie, Deidre, Damian, Mark, Eric, Shane, Anthony, Stefen, Shannon, Ali and Alex; great-grandchildren, Mason, Madison, Hailey, Jace, Hayden, and Allison, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Interment will take place at the Brandon Cemetery. A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Donation in her name may be made to the Brandon Literacy Council, 129 - 12th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4L8.
