D. MARIE FULCHER

D. Marie Fulcher (née Collingwood) passed away peacefully March 18, 2026 with family at her side at Fairview Personal Care Home. Marie was predeceased by her husband John Fulcher, parents Jim and Doris Collingwood, brother Rex Collingwood (Margerette) and their son Dennis Collingwood. She is survived by her three children: Jeff (Liz), Judy (Chuck) and Janice (Paul); Grandchildren: Micheal (Amanda), Lindsay (Darcy), Kyle, Kerri and Payton; Great-grandchildren: Jadyne, Jessilyn (Dylan), Madison, Kaylee, Jayce, Charley, Quin, Deegan, Demi, Morgan, Kyler and Savannah; Great-great-grand daughter Alaia; Sister-in-law Betty Broughton and many other extended family members.

Marie was born during a winter storm on February 3, 1923, on the family farm in Isabella Manitoba. Because of the storm, the doctor could not make it, so her dad delivered her. Her parents and older brother Rex then packed up to venture into the hotel business and moved to Baldur, MB. This is where they started managing their first hotel and Marie started school. After their time in Baldur, they had a short stint in Ninga, MB but Rivers is where they set their roots. During their time in Rivers her family managed the hotel in Rivers, Oak River and Rapid City. Marie spent most of her time in the hotels trying to keep brother Rex out of trouble caring for the CP Railroaders who stayed at the hotel.

After school was finished, Marie travelled to Brandon to attend business college. She came back to Rapid City on the weekends where she met her husband John Jerrard Fulcher on the front steps of The Queens’ Hotel. Marie and Johnnie had a lengthy seven-year engagement before they wed in 1949 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church and celebrated their reception at The Prince Eddy Hotel. Johnnie was a long-haul truck driver for Western Auto Transport who delivered cars from Windsor to Canadian Motors, so it was only fitting their honeymoon took place on one of his trips, making a quick stop in Niagara Falls. Marie’s first job was at the Drewry’s Brewery Products in Brandon’s north end, where she established herself in a predominantly male workplace. This would continue to be a theme in her life.

They bought their first and forever home in 1956 at 1402 2nd Street. There, she left her job at the brewery to raise her three children Jeff, Judy and Janice. When Johnnie passed away at an early age in 1974 of ALS, Marie resiliently entered back into the workforce at Zenith Paving. It was there. she met many of her dearest friends. Marie retired at 80 years old after she conquered the first of the computer era.

During retirement she had many hobbies. Her yard was her pride and joy. Marie was known for her green grass, many Hostas and a quick chat at the fence. Marie loved crocheting and knitting, passing it on to her daughter and granddaughter. Getting a hand made item from Marie always came with a special tag, that said, “handmade with love by Nana”. She took many trips in her many (mostly red) Thunderbirds all over to visit her family, as long as she was home at night. Confidently, she maintained her driver’s licence well into her 90‘s. Marie was also a dedicated sister to The Order of The Easter Star. She was proud to hold the title of the longest living member of The Queen Mary Chapter.

Marie was able to stay in her forever home until July 21st, 2025. She gracefully walked out of her house into the ambulance where she stayed at the hospital until she was placed at Fairview Personal Care Home in October. At Fairview, she celebrated her 103rd birthday with all her friends and family. She dazzled all the staff with her amazing charm, wit and memory. The family would like to thank the staff in the BRHC Palliative unit and Fairview for the excellent care and compassion.

Marie was a loving person who cared deeply for her family and friends. Because of her age she saw many friends and family members pass on before her. This made her cherish all her relationships dearly and was loved by all who knew her. Her legacy will live on through her family and the home and yard she treasured, which will be lovingly maintained according to her wishes.

The family invite you to celebrate Marie’s life with a tea and lunch at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday March 26, 2026, at The Brandon Shrine Club – 1110 McTavish Ave E. A private internment will take place before the celebration. If you wish, donations in memory may be made to The ALS Society of Manitoba.
