SHIRLEY ESTELLE TOOLIS Shirley Estelle Toolis, nee Setter, born April 22, 1931, at Kamsack, SK, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2005 in Winnipeg. Between grades three and eight, Shirley took schooling in three different provinces, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Manitoba, finishing at Kelvin Technical High School. She was a member of the C.G.I.T. in Ontario and of Job's Daughters, Bethel No. 1 in Winnipeg until she was 20 years old. Shirley was musically gifted and sang solos in the church choir. She trained in piano at the Toronto Conservatory of Music and competed in the Winnipeg Music Festival. She also painted in oils: her pieces appeared in several shows. She worked for CN Telegraph until her marriage, then Metropolitan Homes in Transcona for six and a half years, then for the cities of Transcona and Winnipeg for 24 years, until retirement. Shirley had a substantial talent for keeping the peace between groups of people, and always believed that she should pay back the city that had been good to her. At one time or another she served on: the Steering Committee for a Transcona Senior Citizens Drop-in Centre, the Transcona Museum Board (of which she was a charter member), and the liaison committee between the Transcona Recreation Board and the Transcona School Board. She was involved in the building of the Roland Michener Arena. She also served as secretary-treasurer of the St. Boniface Liberal Women's Association for three years. She had many interests: people, politics, art, music, genealogy and coin-collecting; but her main interest was always the happiness and well-being of her husband and family. Survived by her son Richard, daughter Asia, daughter Lorna. A memorial service will be held at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I miss her and how do you know us - Posted by: Asia (She's my gandma) on: Feb 11, 2016

  • Rick and Lorna, I am sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. As a former member of the community of Transcona, I appreciated the work that your Mom had done for the community. Many nights were spent at Roland Michener Arena where I proudly pointed your mom's name out to everyone during breaks at my kids hockey games. We now live in Calgary, but each time we get a chance to go back home...we will share with our children the stories of the "name on the plaque". Our thoughts and prayers are with you both. - Posted by: Jacqueline Popplestone (Wickdahl) (Family) on: Oct 03, 2005

  • Sorry to hear of Shirley's passing, unfortunately time and distance has prevented closer family ties. We have many fond memories of time spent together in the past. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lorna and Rick at this difficult time. - Posted by: Norm & Gerry Wickdahl (Family) on: Oct 03, 2005
