Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALEXANDER WILLIAM POTTER March 5, 1912 - December 14, 2005 Peacefully at home on December 14, 2005, Alex, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away in his 94th year. Alex will be lovingly remembered by Evelyn, his wife of 69 years; daughter Florence (Don Whitmore), son Murray (Marjorie Mitchell), son Ron, and son Clifford (Elaine Berglund), eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, brother Don (Velma) and many nieces and nephews. Alex was predeceased by his Father in 1931, Mother in 1941, two brothers in infancy, brothers Melvin in 1986, Wilbert in 1992 and Weldon in 1994. Alex was born in Springhill, MB, the third of seven sons, to George and Mary Potter, and grew up in that region on the family farm. On the death of his Father in 1931, when Alex was only 19, he remained on the farm with his Mother and assumed responsibility for the farm operations. In 1936, Alex married Ev; the love of his life. In 1937, they bought their own farm and under the guidance of his father-in-law, Stanley Baker, built a new home in 1938. With this experience, Alex and Stanley then began to do custom carpentry work to supplement the farm income. There are many buildings in Neepawa and surrounding area that Alex worked on, and it was work that he enjoyed. Alex was active in the community serving on Church, School and Elevator Boards. He was a member of Springhill (later Neepawa) United Church, Orange Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star. Alex and Ev left the farm and moved to Neepawa in 1962 where he worked until his retirement in 1977. Alex loved the great outdoors, especially fishing at Sandy Lake and his many trailer trips around Canada and the United States. His travels culminated with fourteen winters spent as a Snowbird at Magic Valley Trailer Park in Weslaco, TX where he made many friends. Alex and Ev loved dancing and were members of the Neepawa Whirlaways Square Dance Club. An avid fisherman, Alex earned his Master Angler award for a trophy pickerel. He enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles and reading Westerns, but his favourite pastime was playing pool. When Texas travel was no longer an option for Alex he settled year-round in Neepawa until 1999 when he moved to Winnipeg to be closer to specialized medical assistance and family support. The family is grateful for the excellent medical care that Alex received from all his doctors and nurses both in Neepawa and in Winnipeg. Special thanks to the nursing staff at Victoria General Hospital who gave him wonderful care during his several stays. Alex will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all his family and his many friends. In lieu of flowers, a donation in the memory of Alex may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, or to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held in Neepawa United Church in Neepawa, MB on Saturday, December 17 at 2:00 p.m.. Interment to follow in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery. White's Funeral Home Neepawa-Carberry in care of arrangements.
