ALLISTER D. THOMSON January 7, 1927 - December 31, 2005 It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Allister D. Thomson on Saturday, December 31, 2005, at the age of 78, one week short of his 79th birthday. Allister was predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Mary Elizabeth Patrick. A caring and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Jan, his son-in-law Doug (Volkart), his grandchildren, Shaun (Darcie), Cameron (Amie), Tara (John), and his great-grandchildren, Calla Mary Elizabeth and Maxwell Thomson, whom he adored. He is also survived by his sister Freda Hibbert, Chemainus, BC; and brothers, Theo, Victoria, BC, and Og (June), Edmonton, AB; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Al grew up in Elmwood and Morse Place where he moved next door to his future wife. After a seven-year courtship, Al and Mary exchanged vows on June 7, 1952. Throughout their 49 years of marriage, Al proved to be a nurturing and supportive husband that epitomized the notion of in sickness and in health. Al's career included working at Bridge and Tank, Dominion Bridge, and Manitoba Rolling Mills in Selkirk. After 34 years he retired as a purchasing agent on April 1, 1989. Al was the kind of father any little girl, and later woman, would grow to love and endlessly admire. He went to great lengths to shelter and protect his only child throughout her life. Upon marriage, he embraced his son-in-law Doug with open arms, and grew to love him as his own. His grandchildren Shaun, Cam and Tara were the sparkle in his eyes which was displayed through his constant love and affection. Over the past year he eagerly anticipated the arrival of his two great-grandchildren. Although he was only given a few short months of time with Calla and Max, the adoration in his eyes touched everyone's hearts. Al's commitment, love and devotion to his family are those of which we all aspire to follow. The family would like to thank Dr. Komenda for his many years of care and kindness. As well, a special thank you goes out to the nurses of N3 East and N1 South at Concordia Hospital for their support and gentle caring. A celebration of Al's life will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Saviour's Anglican Church, SE Munroe and Grey, with Rev. Rick Condo officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al's memory to one of the following charities: Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6; The Crohn's Colitis Foundation, P.O.
