MALCOLM RICHARD SMITH (MAC / SMITTY) Peacefully on March 14, 2006 Malcolm Smith passed away at the age of 88, with his family at his side. Left to treasure the many memories of their dad, grandpa and great-grandpa are his son Dougald (Marjorie) Smith of Ingleside, ON; and daughter Maureen (Richard) Kolodie of Winnipeg; five grandchildren, Gregory (Doreen) Smith of Cornwall, ON, Kimberly (Glenn) Barrett of Hamilton, Erin (Michael) Palamar, Colin (Karen) Kolodie, Michael (Kristin) Kolodie of Winnipeg; and great-grandchildren, Spencer, Cameron, Riley, Mackenzie of Winnipeg and Melanie and Morgan of Cornwall. Malcolm was predeceased by his wife Yvonne (Maire) Smith; and parents, Dougald and Alberta Smith. Malcolm was born May 30, 1917 in Kisbey, SK and was christened in the United Church the day it was dedicated. Malcolm took his education in Kisbey School. During the depression, he took jobs such as labouring for farmers and townspeople. Malcolm joined the Anglican Church and enjoyed taking part in the boys' group and singing in the choir. With the help of Howard Pollard, Malcolm obtained employment on a mink ranch at Winnipeg. He would later own a small mink ranch of his own. On July 3, 1940, Malcolm married Yvonne Albertine Maire. During the Second World War Malcolm served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. After his discharge from the Air Force he became a very skilled plasterer, making intricate moldings seen in many of the old buildings in Winnipeg. For the next 25 years Malcolm worked for TCA, later Air Canada, in Winnipeg and Montreal, where he retired as an inspector of overhauled jet engines. After his retirement Malcolm and Yvonne spent many winters in Florida. He lived life to the fullest. As many people know he loved playing tricks on people. He also enjoyed playing the violin and harmonica. The family would like to thank Malcolm's nurse Yvonne, his special health care aide Tony and all the caring nurses and staff at the St. Norbert Nursing Home. A special thank you to The Rev. Geoff Woodcroft who has provided ongoing pastoral care, love and support, and was with the family at the time of Malcolm's passing. Flowers gratefully declined. At Malcolm's request, in lieu of flowers if friends so desire a donation can be made in Malcolm's memory to the Salvation Army. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in celebration of Malcolm's life will take place on Friday, March 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St. Interment will take place at a later date. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E. J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald Street 253-5086
