HAJI ZOUBEIDA (BEIDI) DE BEER (nee ADAMS) 1918 - 2006 After a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, our mother peacefully passed away on April 1, 2006. Beidi, will be dearly missed by her children, Nazeem (Jean), Adela, Faïz (Louise), Thuraya (George) and Isham; grandchildren, Shireen, Michael, Philip, Józef, Rashad, Stephen and Jameel; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Daniel, Isaiah, Xavier, Jaden and Aisha; and in South Africa by her brother Yusuf, sisters, Kulsum and Roseda and numerous relatives and friends. Zoubeida was born in Cape Town, South Africa. After completing her junior certificate, she attended Zonnebloem Teachers College. During her practicum at Chapel Street School, she met and fell in love with her future husband Daniel de Beer. Upon her certification she taught at Ragmaniah Muslim School, Talfallah Muslim School and Muir Street Muslim School. 12,000 miles over land and sea we travelled to Canada, and you behave like this. Haven't I always said fair is fair? In 1961 to 1962 our family immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada. It was quite an adjustment for all of us. For our mother who was an excellent cook, finding the proper ingredients for her specialties, was a constant struggle. Through innovation and imagination even more wonderful dishes and confections were created. It gave all her children an appreciation for fine food served in a warm atmosphere. These culinary delights were sold and raffled to raise funds for the Anti-Apartheid Movement of Manitoba and the first Mosque in Winnipeg. Her passion for fairness and justice made her a strong ally in the fight against the evil of Apartheid. Our home at 177 Oak St. was a welcoming place for South African immigrants, other new Canadians and foreign students. There was always a new face at family celebratory feasts. Daar is net een Zoubeida, wat so lekker kan kook Zoubeida worked as a nurse's aide at the Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital for many years. On her retirement, she and Daniel travelled extensively to many parts of the world, including a year of teaching in Melbourne, Australia. Mom was a great story and joke teller. She is fondly remembered for her fine wit. Ginny , as her grandchildren called her, delighted in them, with a ready laugh whenever they said or did something funny. Mom was also a Master Knitter, from the most intricate to the simplest in design. Many of her creations are still being worn by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom completed the Haj. Separated from her Wakheel by plane delays, she persevered, joined her group and fulfilled this pillar of Islam. Our family would like to thank Doreen Ferguson-Horvath and the staff at Park Manor for the wonderful care that you provided to our mother over many years and the Manitoba Islamic Centre for all their help during this very difficult time. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the Batsons and the Rhodas for their concern and assistance in her last years. Donations in Mom's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Society. The Prophet PBUH, taught Paradise is under the feet of the Mothers A celebration of Mom's life will be held at 956 St Mary's Rd. on Saturday, April 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
