CHARLES FREDERICK THOMPSON (BUBBLES) Peacefully, with his family by his side, Charlie passed away at the Grace Hospital on Monday, January 29, 2007 at the age of 78 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kathleen Thompson; children, Chuck (Irene), Gary (Wendy), Sharon, John (Lorraine), Kathleen (Craig) and Donnarae (John); his grandchildren, Jamie, Jesse, Luke, Ben, T.J., Matthew, Nikki, Bjorn (Kacey), Kara, Aaron, Brett, Andrew, Sean and Brady; great-grandchild Bodey; brothers, Donald (Kay), Russell (Margaret); brother-in-law Bill (Lou) Pepper; sister-in-law Joyce (Gordon) McEwan and family, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and his faithful canine companion Geordy. He was predeceased by his mother Helen and father George; his brothers, Laurie and Jim. Dad was born, and spent his formative years in St. Boniface. When he was 18 years old, he took employment as a truck driver with Picardy's Trucking. At the age of 23, Dad left Picardy's and was accepted as a Police Constable with the Winnipeg Police Department. Dad grew to love policing, spending most of his first 17 years working in Beat Patrol and later Cruiser Cars in the downtown and North End areas. In 1969 he was promoted to Detective and spent the next 17 years working on plainclothes investigations. Dad was again promoted to Detective Sergeant and then Sergeant-1, working in the Robbery, Homicide and Fraud Units. Dad was well respected and liked by all who knew and worked with him. He retired from the Police Department in March, 1986. Dad was a longtime member and Past President of the Winnipeg Police Wildlife Association and the Police Veteran's Association. He spent countless hours organizing the Annual Police Veteran's Golf Tournament and several fishing derbies. He still found time to canvass for the Canadian Cancer Society for several years. In his earlier years, he was a coach for winning teams of the Winnipeg Police Junior Rifle Club and also coached the Winnipeg Police Departments female baseball team. He was a proud volunteer at the 1999 World Junior Hockey Championships. Charlie was a true Toronto Maple Leaf Fan, rarely missing a game. Until his recent decline in health, Dad enjoyed watching and cheering on his grandchildren at their many sporting events. His presence and support will be sorely missed. Dad was most content at his cottage at White Lake in the company of his family and friends, where many happy times were spent. Dad was a competitor and was always ready for a game of horseshoes, cards or crib which he would often win. His day was fulfilled sitting on the dock watching the sun go down. In the winter months Dad enjoyed swinging his golf clubs in Palm Springs. Dad pursued his passion for fishing and wildfowl hunting, always looking forward with great anticipation to the Fall hunting season with his loyal canine buddies. His loving dedication to his family knew no bounds. He lived his life with generosity, kindness and integrity. Dad's legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren. He is our inspiration and will always live on in our hearts. A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at Klassen Funeral Home on Friday, February 2 at 3:30 p.m., with Police Chaplain Devon Clunis officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3.
