ALVIN FREDRICK PORATH December 3, 1920 April 27, 2007 With a quick wit and positive outlook, Alvin embraced life. His interesting, detailed stories over the years revealed the depth of his experiences and the challenges he overcame. He was the oldest son of 12 children on a small farm near Piney, Manitoba, he served and was injured during the Second World War in Germany, his Vita home was swept away by a tornado, and he faced many medical difficulties in his later years. These challenges were a part of who he was and why he was so strong and always persevered. Alvin was a devoted family man, always there to help relatives and his children with their building, electrical, concrete, and yard projects. He was a skilled handyman and took a great deal of pride in his work. This was truly reflected in his position as a head custodian with the Fort Garry School Division. Alvin was an avid reader and had a fondness of Louis L'Amour westerns, often enjoying them in his chair . He loved nature, and he created beautiful wood carvings. He enjoyed working with Minnie on their garden. Over his 86 years, Alvin acquired and shared a vast amount of knowledge in areas ranging from history through nature, and many trades. Alvin treasured his family: Minnie, his loving wife of 57 years; his sons, Ken (Geri, grandchildren, Jason and Alison), Bruce, Ron (Debbie, grandchildren, Ryan, Scott, Laura, great-grandson Dorion), and Rick (Kathy, grandchildren, Kyle, Trevor and Curtis). He will also be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Grace (Tom), Eileen, Donna (Gill), Janice (Al), Bertha, Doris (Peter); his brothers, Lars (Noella) and Garry (Lorraine), and sister-in-law Clementine. He was predeceased by his beloved son Bruce; father Albert; mother Esther; sister Kathleen, and brothers, Neil and Carl. Alvin loved his wife Minnie dearly and they did so many things together. They travelled the world and enjoyed winter vacations to warm spots the most. In particular, Alvin cherished their holidays in Hawaii. He considered himself a very lucky man to have married Minnie. True to character, even during his final two month stay in St. Boniface General Hospital, Alvin continued to be feisty, joking and trying to be positive when family and friends visited. We wish to thank the caring staff who were so kind and supportive. We also wish to acknowledge the friendship and support of special neighbours, Steve and Nina Luhowy, and Len and Vickie Scales. Please join the family in a celebration of Alvin's life on Wednesday, May 2 at Niakwa Country Club, 620 Niakwa Road. The service will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. Family and friends are invited to say a few words and share stories of remembrance during the program. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alvin's memory to the St. Boniface General Hospital would be sincerely appreciated. A private interment is planned for Wednesday morning.
