Date of Passing: Jul 25, 2007
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVELYN KRISTIN THORVALDSON Peacefully on July 25, 2007, at her home in Teulon, Manitoba, Evelyn Thorvaldson passed away at the age of 68 years. Evelyn was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Lundar, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon in 2005 and her brother Paul Ganton in 2003. She is survived by her daughter Signy and son Paul (Brenda); her grandchildren Matthew, Kevin, Blake and Alexis, all of Winnipeg; sisters-in-law Lauraine of Teulon, Gloria of Montana and Gladys of Winnipeg; brothers-in-law Gunnar of Edmonton and Augie of Winnipeg; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Evelyn began her education at Stony Hill in a one-room schoolhouse, and then at the convent in St. Laurent following which time she met her beloved Gordon at a hockey game. They lived in Winnipeg, Montreal and Nassau intermittently, spending time in their much loved Husabrekka near Lundar. Evelyn's presence in the Icelandic community in Canada has made the impossible possible - her vision and dedication has resulted in successful fund raising for the Icelandic Chair with the HIP Committee, the turn around of the Lögberg Heimskringla in its transition years and more recently the huge success of the INL Convention here in Winnipeg. When Evelyn was there things got done, and done well. She brought this same love and dedication to her work in the Church and the Manitoba Curling Association. Evelyn was a woman of many talents: musically gifted, loved to sing, a published author, writing My Amma and Me, an endearing story of Evelyn's upbringing. She knit, made vinarterta, pönnukökur, Kleinur and a host of Icelandic baking. She taught Icelandic classes. But foremost in Evelyn's life were her family and especially her grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Evelyn's life will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. in Epiphany Lutheran Church, 200 Dalhousie Drive, Winnipeg, Pastor Ed Mitchler officiating. Should friends desire, donations may be sent to Logberg Heimskringla Inc., 100-283 Portage Avenue, R3B 2B5, and Epiphany Lutheran Church 200 Dalhousie, R3T 2Z1. We have known your Mom and Dad for many years and loved them dearly. I (Norma) spent a lot of time with your Dad when he was at HSC as I worked there and would go to his room during my breaks. Your Mom was usually there and we had visiting time also. Your Mom had a lot to offer and did it so willingly. She will be missed so much by you all and her Icelandic community have lost a dear friend. May your parents be united once again. God's blessing to you all.
