Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIA JOLANTA ZOFIA POPKEVICH Suddenly, at her home on August 12, 2007. Devoted wife of Adam Popkevich (who predeceased her in 1983) and beloved mother of Joanna, Mark, Stefan, Sandy and Christopher. She is also survived by her brother Maciej and his family in Europe, and seven grandchildren in Winnipeg and Ontario. Maria was born in the city of Wilno, Poland (now Lithuania) in 1926. War interrupted her teenage years, and she was inducted into a labour camp in Russia. Later she served proudly in the transport division of the Polish Armed Forces, in Northern Africa and the Middle East. After the war, she met and married her husband (also from Poland) in England. They immigrated to Canada in 1957 with their three eldest children and settled in Winnipeg, where the two younger children were born. Maria worked many years at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre but devoted the majority of her time to lovingly raising her family. She was also an avid lover of reading, gardening and the outdoors and enthusiastically shared these interests with her family. Cremation has taken place in accordance with her wishes. The chapel at Klassen Funeral Home will be available on Thursday, August 23 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for those wishing to pay their respects. There will be a private interment service at St. Mary's Cemetery attended by the family on Friday, August 24. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
