JOHN BECKER John Becker of Winnipeg, MB, formerly of Marquette, MB passed away at the age of 89 years on February 9, 2008 at Concordia Hospital. John was predeceased by his parents, Jakob and Maria Becker, three sisters, Helena Redekop, Margaretha Voth and Marianne Friesen, two brothers, Henry and Jakob, as well as one sister-in-law Helen Becker and two brothers-in-law, Wilhelm Redekop and Peter Voth. He is survived by one brother Peter (Elizabeth) Becker, sister-in-law Elsie Becker, brother-in-law George Friesen and numerous nieces and nephews. John was born August 15, 1918 in the village of Schoensee in the Molotschna Colony in Southern Ukraine, to Jakob and Maria Becker. John was one of seven children to survive to adulthood. In spite of the terrible unrest that gripped Tzarist and Communist Russia in the Molotschna Colony in Southern Ukraine from 1914 until the Becker family left their Ukrainian homeland, John had had a happy and reasonably carefree childhood; a testament to the loving and secure family into which he had been born. In 1925 John's father made the decision to emigrate to Canada. On November 26, 1925 the family left Ukraine and arrived in Meadows, MB on December 23, 1925. They spent two months living in Camp 2 (approx. four miles southwest of Meadows) and in the spring of 1926 they bought a farm just north of Ste. Elizabeth, MB. They lived here until November 1929, at which time they moved to Pigeon Lake, MB. In the spring of 1930 they rented (and later purchased) a farm at Marquette. John farmed at Marquette until he retired from farming. John was baptized, on confession of his faith and became a lifelong member of Schoenfelder Mennonite Church at Pigeon Lake, MB. The funeral service will be held in the Pigeon Lake Schoenfelder Mennonite Church on Wednesday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at the church cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Room ON109 - 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. Arrangements by Birchwood funeral chapel 1-204-346-1030 or 1-888-454-1030
