HELMUT TIEDE On July 31, 2008 Helmut Tiede passed away peacefully into the loving arms of his Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, with his family by his side. Helmut was born to his parents, Robert and Erna Tiede, on September 11, 1925, in Wjasowitz, Wolhynien (Ukraine), where he grew up with his younger brother, Elmer, on the family farm. He was predeceased by his father, who was assassinated in September of 1938. From that time on, their life and survival was hard. During the Second World War, he was drafted as an interpreter for the German army, where Helmut served until the end of the war. When Helmut was released from the prison camp, he resided in Westfalia, West Germany. Helmut was employed as a machinists' helper at a Compressed Gas Factory. In 1947, Helmut was reunited with his mother and brother, and they lived together in Westfalia. There they attended the Evangelical Free Church. Helmut received Jesus as his personal Saviour at the age of 24 and was baptized by Reverend Wili Meklenburg at Bockum Hovel Baptist Church. In 1950, he immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg, where he found employment with the Manitoba Sausage Company. There he was employed for 38 years until his retirement. During this time, he made McDermot Avenue Baptist Church his spiritual home, where he served with love and joy in the church choir, as an usher, financial assistant, trustee and deacon. On October 27, 1951, he married Elvira Schmidt. God blessed them with four sons. One son predeceased him in infancy. On the weekends, he enjoyed outdoor life: fishing, camping and boating with his family and friends. A cherished family memory was building a cottage together at Lake Nutimik. After his retirement in 1989, he enjoyed going south with his wife to shorten the cold winters, travelling to Germany, and visiting with his family and friends. Helmut is survived by his wife, Elvira of 57 years; children, Robert, Valerie, Roger, Denise, Werner and Jennifer; and grandchildren, Melissa (Robby), Ryan, Stacy, Jonathan, Miranda, Justin, Megan, Matthew, Joshua and Benjamin. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at McDermot Avenue Baptist Church, 821 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow in Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Lake Nutimik Baptist Camp, P.O. Box 68, Seven Sisters, MB R0E 1Y0.
