MARGARET ELSIE THORKELSSON Margaret passed away on September 18, 2008 in Deer Lodge Centre with her family at her side. Predeceased by her daughter Jean (2005) and her husband Edwin (2005) Thorkelsson, her parents Edith and Timothy Webster, sisters Dorothy Lyons, Edith Laurence, Lil McMillan and her brothers Tim, Jack and George. She will be greatly missed by her daughters Lynne (Ron Peter), Ione (David Arnott) and Anne (Jim Gregorchuk) and grandchildren John and Charlie Arnott and Maggie Gregorchuk, sister-in-law Fae Frohwerk and brother-in-law Raymond Thorkelsson and her many nieces and nephews, friends and associates. Margaret was born February 29, 1920 in Ashern. She was the youngest of seven children who all worked on the farm. She had a strong interest in sports and enjoyed running the three miles home from Ashern. She learned to love the outdoors and throughout her life treasured gardens and birds and had to get outdoors for a while every day. She left home to train in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) where she graduated as a Registered Nurse and worked in Trail, BC. before returning to Manitoba and marrying Edwin in 1944. They remained happily married for 58 years. While living in Ashern she was called on many times to treat the ill and injured when there was no doctor in the area. She was pleased when the community formally recognized her services. With their four daughters, Margaret and Edwin moved to the new community of Thompson in 1959 and then to Winnipeg settling on Amundsen Bay, where they lived happily for 30 years. Margaret was a wonderful loving and supportive mother and grandmother who always encouraged her children and grandchildren and celebrated their accomplishments. In Winnipeg, she returned to work as a R.N. at Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children. After some years of retirement she went to work as a nurse at The Bay store on Portage Ave and enjoyed the new challenge of occupational nursing. After retirement she and Edwin travelled and then moved to the Lions Estates where they made many new friends and were champion shuffleboard players. After Dad's passing Mom's many friends supported her. The family extends a special thanks to Betty and Russell Holland for their strong support and to the special group of home care workers who helped to keep her independent in the last few years. We would also like to thank the wonderful supportive staff at Deer Lodge Centre who cared for Mom over the past three months and to the pastoral team of St. Chad's Anglican Church. A memorial service will be held at St. Chad's Anglican Church, Assiniboia Christian Centre, 3390 Portage Ave., Tuesday September 23 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Chad's Anglican Church.
