STEINGREMUR (BARRY) THORNSON Peacefully on November 20, 2008 at the Riverview Health Centre, Barry slipped away from this life and into the arms of God, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Barry is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jeannette; sons Wayne, Dale, and Gerald; brothers Leonard (Margaret), Raymond, and Doug (Vicki), and sister Shirley. Barry was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Betty, in-laws William and Roseline Rybak, and sister-in-law Betty (Raymond). Also left to mourn are brother-in-law Tony (Maureen) Rybak and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews as well as special circle of friends. Barry was born in Winnipeg on March 17, 1936. He was an exceptional athlete as a youth and young man, and sports were a passion his entire life. In 1953 Barry began his career with the Province of Manitoba in the Department of Finance, retiring in 1993 as the Director of Capital Finance. The focus of Barry's life was always his devotion to his family and friends. Barry will be deeply missed by his friends, and his passing leaves a huge void in our family's lives. We pray that God will temper our loss with memories of the wonderful man he was. The family would like to thank the Doctors, nurses and volunteers at both CancerCare Manitoba and the Riverview Health Centre for the care and compassion they showed our family during Barry's long fight with cancer. Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Barry's life will take place Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home, with a reception to follow. A private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, ON 109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg R3E 0V9, in Barry's name.
