Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN AMY THOMAS The family sadly announces that on Monday, December 22, 2008, Helen Amy Thomas passed away at the Selkirk General Hospital. First born of Royal and Clara and a gift to all who knew her. She arrived on a Christmas morning near Swan River, Manitoba. She moved with her family to Selkirk in 1946 and lived in the family home for the remainder of her life. Helen lived a life focused on the well being of others, demonstrating the power of kindness and compassion and impacting countless lives with her acts of charity and selfless devotion to their welfare. She was a committed volunteer and board member of many community organizations. Among her many tributes are the Manitoba Citizenship Award and the title of Dame of Grace in honour of 35 years in the nursing division of St. John Ambulance Brigade 25 of which she was superintendent of the Selkirk division. In her role of superintendent she trained in emergency measures response and casualty simulation providing training and simulation services provincially. She actively lobbied for the rights and independence of the mentally challenged and was a key force behind the opening of the first Community Living residence in Selkirk. She found great joy in welcoming people to her home and table; in family and friends; her garden; and her pets. She had a keen interest in the world around her and a wonderful sense of fun. Sadly saying goodbye are sisters Vi Bauerfind; brother Russell and foster children Alta Carter and David Perez and their families. Also saying farewell are the families of brothers Robert (Bob) and Gordon and sister Louise Angus who are waiting with their parents to greet her. Her passing leaves an enormous gap in our lives but also with the hope of living in the Spirit she exemplified. The greatest legacy she leaves is one of love having embraced throughout her life the goodness and wisdom in 1st Corinthians: 13. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Ave, with Rev. Deborah Vitt officiating. In her memory, if so desired, we know Helen would appreciate a donation to the CNIB, Cancercare Manitoba, Canadian Diabetic Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
