HELEN (LENA) POW (nee TKACHUK) April 17, 1917 - March 26, 2009 With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Helen (Lena) Pow on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Concordia Hospital. She is survived by sons, Jim (Iris), Norman (Mary Ann); grandsons, Cameron (Tanya), John (Tasha); great-grandchildren, Alicia, Emma, Cayla and Dawson Pow; daughter-in-law Dorothy Pow; sisters, Anne Finch, Olga Kowaliuk of Winnipeg, Sophie (Bill) Kopechanski of Thunder Bay, ON; sister-in-law Mary Tkachuk of Winnipeg; and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Alexander Aiken (Sandy) in 1960; son Lawrence in 2007; her parents, Nicholas and Sophie Tkachuk; sister Verna (Nickolas) Kosowan; brother John Tkachuk; and sister Mary Reniak. Mom was born and raised in Gardenton, MB, moved to the Emerson District to gain employment where she met and married her husband Sandy, April 29, 1936. Leaving the Pow family farm in 1947, they made their home in Emerson until 1963 when she became widowed and moved to Winnipeg. She remained in her home until four days before her passing. Mom was a fiercely independent lady who wasn't afraid of the hard work she encountered during the course of her life. She had a very green thumb and always had plants in her home and in the hallways of her apartment building. Mom could bring back to life the sickest plant brought to her and grow most anything she planted. She will be missed. Thanks to the paramedic service, doctors, nurses and care staff for their dignity, compassion and class while caring for mom in the hospital and a very special thanks to Aunt Ollie who dedicated so much of her time providing care and support for mom over the last few months. At mom's request, cremation has taken place, (a family memorial service will take place at a later date). Those wishing may make a donation in Mom's memory to the Town of Emerson, Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 340, Emerson, MB R0A 0L0 or to a charity of their choice. Neil Bardal Inc. (204) 949 - 2200 nbardal.mb.ca
