GORDON HENRY BEATY We announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Gordon Beaty of Winnipeg, MB on August 19, 2009 at the age of 83 at the Victoria General Hospital. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Erleen (Stevens) in 1988 and brother Earl (Ann) Beaty. He was the son of George and Bertha (Johnson). He is survived by his sons, Ken (Marlene), Jim (Margaret) and daughter Diane (Donald) Masson. He also leaves grandchildren, Kristen (Norm) Buchanan, Matthew (Christie); Andrea, Megan (Jessie) Fraser; Amanda (Kevin) Yorston, Kelly, Brendan (Jillian) and great-grandchild Coleton Beaty, along with his devoted companion, Diana Wauters. He will be greatly missed by his children, family and friends. Gordon was born in Winnipeg on July 24, 1926. He had a passion for trains and began an apprenticeship as a carman with the CNR in 1943. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1944 to 1946 then returned to the railway. He married Erleen Mae Stevens in 1947, settled in St. Vital and raised three children, retiring in 1985 after 41 years of service. He was a devoted husband, father and friend of four paw pals, Penny and Toby. When the family was young, there were always summer camping trips, rides on the Grand Beach Train and excursions through the Rocky Mountains to the west coast. Later on he developed his retreat at Lee River near Lac du Bonnet where he spent many summers and made many friends. He enjoyed fishing, building his model railway and spent endless hours building and fixing things. He was extremely independent and self-reliant sharing his many skills with friends, family and anyone in need of help. According to Gordon's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, 525 Wardlaw Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0L9, Friday, August 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, R3C 2B7.
