EMMA GODFREY COUTTS (nee COMACK) 1919 - 2009 During the early morning of August 26, 2009, Emma who was less than one month from her 90th Birthday, passed away peacefully at the Concordia Hospital. Emma was fondly referred to as Millie by her many friends and family. Emma has now rejoined her loving husband, Charles Coutts, who passed away in January 2007, three months before their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Now, together again, two strong souls, continuing their journey together with everlasting kindness and love for one another. Emma was born in Glasgow, Scotland, immigrating to Canada with the rest of her family in 1929 at the age of ten. After finishing school she was employed at the Eaton store for a period of time until her drive for knowledge and her need for challenge led her to study for a Civil Government career. She gained employment with the City of Winnipeg, where she worked in many capacities. She ultimately became the right hand woman for the City of Winnipeg Engineer and remained with him until her retirement. During this time she gained the trust and admiration of many representatives of the construction industry as our city grew. Her selfless dedications did not end at the work place. She always found the time to fulfill her role as a loving wife and mother as well as a multitude of other worthwhile and admirable activities. She managed to give her all to the community with involvement as a founding member of Wesley United Church, which is now Immanuel United Church, the Sons of Scotland and many other community needs that called her to the task, and there was never a task too large for Emma. After Emma and Charles retirement, they moved to Matlock, Manitoba on Lake Winnipeg, where they continued to enjoy their lives together, bird watching, gardening, bike riding, cross-country skiing or just going for a long walk. During this time, they travelled a great deal. Sometimes just jumping into the car with no real idea where they were going or where they would end up. They would just hear about some bad weather and go in a different direction. When not on one of their adventures, they would often come to Winnipeg to look after their two granddaughters, Chelsea and Chloe, at every opportunity, as the girls were both the shining lights of their lives. Emma was loved by all and touched and made a difference in many people's lives. She spent the last few years in care after her husband and partner Charles passed away. Emma resided for the past year at the Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home. Prior to this, she spent a period of time at Deer Lodge as well as the Misericordia Care Facility. The family would like to take this opportunity to give our gratitude and thanks to all who cared for her, including special appreciation to the staff at Concordia Hospital, and Bethania for contributing to Emma's comfort, as well as their compassion to the family during her final days. Emma was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles Coutts, her mother Emma Comack, her father William Comack and sisters Jessie Hall (nee Comack) and Agnes Comack as well as her brother Hugh Comack and his wife Kaye. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her son Bryan Coutts, her granddaughters, Chelsea Coutts and Chloe Coutts, as well her daughter-in-law Barbara Coutts. Her loss will also be deeply felt by the many cousins, nieces and nephews in both the Comack and Coutts families as well as the many friends that she made throughout her life. A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home with a reception to follow. An interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery. All who wish are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Emma's name to the St. Amant Foundation, 440 River Rd., or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Although unrelated, my wife, Linda, always called Millie and Charlie Auntie and Uncle. Both treated Linda and our family as their own. Our children enjoyed visits for baked goodies and lots of love. We especially loved their visit to Toronto 25+ years ago. Linda and I felt we were partying with friends our age, even though Millie and Charlie were 25 to 30 years older. Our thoughts and prayers go to Bryan and family. Millie will be deeply missed by all. The only solace is knowing that Millie and Charlie are together again. - Our deepest sympathy, Tom Ritson and family - Posted by: Tom Ritson (Friend) on: Aug 29, 2009
