DR. YEE KIT POON

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. YEE KIT POON Yee Kit passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on September 7, 2009. Born in Hong Kong on January 2, 1924, Y.K. received his medical degree from National Sun Yat Sen University in China and his specialty certification in anesthesia in the United Kingdom. He practiced for close to 20 years in Hong Kong before immigrating to Canada in 1968 with his mother, wife and four children. He practiced at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg as an anesthetist and was a professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He was a widely respected clinician and teacher. Upon his retirement in 1989 the Health Sciences Centre established the Dr. Y.K. Poon award for excellence in clinical teaching. Y.K. is survived by his wife of 60 years King Sang and his four children and their families: Ellen Lee (Kurt), Andrew of Texas, Ronald Poon (Marie Fontaine), Colin and Isabelle of Calgary, Philip Poon (Lori De Pauw), Lauren, Stephanie, Alana of Winnipeg, and Wayne Poon of Winnipeg. He is also survived by his sister Yin Yue Tong and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a devoted husband and father. He was very proud of his six grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He was always a happy chauffeur to their numerous activities and they reveled in his entertaining stories and games. In addition to his interest in medicine, Y.K. was also an avid reader of spy novels and a lover of classical music and opera. The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff at Health Sciences Centre Emergency and GA5. We are also grateful for the medical care given by Dr. John Rabson and family friend, Dr. Brian Penner. In keeping with his wishes, cremation and a private family service has taken place.
