Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOLIVE IRENE RAWSTHORNE December 30, 1916 - September 17, 2009 On Thursday, September 17, after a brief illness, Mom spread her wings. Mom was born and raised in Radville, Saskatchewan, daughter to Ed and Irene Howden. It was here growing up in Radville with her brothers and sister (Archie, Leonard and Lorraine) that Mom developed her love of life and family. In 1938 Mom travelled west to Vancouver to study nursing at the Vancouver General Hospital, graduating in 1941. It was in Vancouver that Mom met a handsome RCAF serviceman (another prairie soul from Saskatchewan) at her Uncle Bill's dance hall; they married on December 31, 1941. Mom and Dad settled in Winnipeg at the end of the war returning to their prairie roots. Mom loved nursing and continued to work as she raised her family. She had a long successful career as a dedicated RN, retiring from nursing at the Victoria General Hospital in 1981. We were truly blessed that Mom's love of nature, her positive outlook on life and her wonderful sense of humour were passed on to her children and grandchildren. Mom was predeceased by her husband Stan in 1999 and granddaughter Alison Irene in 1980. Left to cherish many happy memories are her children, Don, Judy (Larry Dryden), Lee (Elaine), Patti Gay and her grandchildren, Merrit and Kelsy, Chris and Mike, Dusty, Pam (Juan) and Adam and great-grandson Tyler. Mom will also be missed by her sister Lorraine. The family would like to thank the staff at The Rosewood for the wonderful care Mom received for the last five years and the staff at the Kildonan Personal Care Centre for the dignity and respect that she received during her final days. A celebration of Mom's life will take place on Tuesday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Westworth United Church, Grosvenor and Lanark. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
