SALVATORE TOMMASO RACANO It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Salvatore Racano on the evening of Tuesday, October 13, 2009. He leaves his beloved wife of 47 years, Maria and sons, Cosmo (Joan), Carmine (Karen), Joe (Heather) and grandchildren who brought joy to his life, Emma, Luciano, Adrianna, Damiano, Gabriella, Paolo, William and Mia. He is also survived by his sisters, Maria, Emma, Claudina and Leah; and his brother Mauro. He was born July 29, 1935 in Fresagrandinaria, Abruzzi, Italy. Salvatore arrived as a young man in Canada on May 16, 1957. He immigrated to Canada to start a fresh new life and to allow him the opportunity to provide for his family back in Italy. He held various jobs in the early years, most important to him was his time working at the mines in Thompson and culminating his career at CP Rail, Weston Shops. After the passing of his father back in Italy, Salvatore settled in Winnipeg and moved his mother from Italy to live with him. He met his beloved wife Maria in 1961. The following year they married in September and started their life together. Salvatore (Sam) worked hard to provide for his family and wanted to ensure that his boys had every opportunity to succeed in life. He provided them with insight and knowledge that would benefit them throughout their lives. In May 1990, he retired from CP Rail. This was a result of a workplace accident suffered in February 1985. Dad took joy in spending summers at Matlock, taking numerous car trips throughout North America and, in most recent years, vacationing in Florida. He never allowed his health issues to prevent him from enjoying the important things in his life. Even on the day he entered the hospital, plans were underway for yet another home improvement project. Nonno put on a brave and courageous fight. In the end, surrounded by his family and at peace with himself, he was able to let go. Many thanks for the compassion and caring shown by the healthcare providers who assisted Salvatore over the years. Prayers will be held on Monday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. in Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m. also in Mary, Mother of the Church. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley St. Donations can be made to the Lung Association Manitoba, 629 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3A 1P6.
