GRACE LOUISE PROVEN (nee McPherson) On Sunday, December 27, 2009, Grace Louise Proven passed away peacefully in her home with her family at her side. She was 73. Grace Louise will be sadly missed and dearly remembered by her children, Heather (Warren) McKennitt of Winnipeg, Diane (David) Carter-Williamson of Stansted, UK, John (Margaret) Proven of Winnipeg and Tanis (Patrick) Haggerty of Ottawa; as well as her grandchildren: Danae, Michaela and Daria McKennitt; Emily, Erica, Trent and Devon Williamson and their father, John; Evelyn and Helen Carter; Andrew and Mark Proven; and Teagan and Kiera Haggerty. She is also survived by: her brother Donald (Gayle) McPherson of Toronto, Ontario, and their family; her cousin and friend, Janice Messing; and numerous other extended family members. Grace Louise was predeceased by her husband Donald and her parents Doris and Wilfred McPherson of Winnipeg. Grace always knew that she wanted to pursue a career in dietetics. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc., completed a dietetic internship at University Hospital in Saskatoon and enjoyed a rewarding career as a Dietician in Winnipeg and Morden, Manitoba. Grace was a Certified Diabetes Educator and spent the latter part of her career as a Dietician Educator for the Diabetes Education Resource of the Central Regional Health Authority. Along the way, Grace met a number of wonderful people who became lifelong friends. In particular, her school friends and Zeta sorority sisters had a special place in her heart. As a wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Grace Louise was second to none. She was kind, caring, and quiet, very strong and always supportive. Throughout her childhood, Grace Louise spent every summer at Sandy Hook and that love of the lake was transferred first to Falcon Lake and then to Black Sturgeon Lake where she and Dad worked side-by-side to build first a small cabin, and later, our current cottage. It was there, surrounded by family, that she most loved to be. Almost three years ago, Grace Louise bravely faced a cancer diagnosis and subsequently met every challenge associated with her illness with her characteristic determination and strength. We are so proud of you Mum! A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 2, 2010. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to honour Grace's memory may make a donation to either the Canadian Diabetes Association www.diabetes.ca or the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation www.cancercarefdn.mb.ca. Thank you to the supportive CancerCare team who cared for Grace with great kindness and respect. We won't be without you Mum! Our memories of your strength will carry us. Your example will guide us. Your love will sustain us!
