ALFRED THOMAS July 22, 1930 February 1, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Thomas at the age of 79 on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Concordia Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer and dementia. He was born in Herne, Germany and came to Canada in 1954 following his brother Rudy and sister-in-law Maria. His future wife Ingrid, followed him in 1956 and they married on March 31, 1956. Daughter Peggy was born in 1959. Alfred made many new friends coming to Canada, which became family, and they all enjoyed many happy hours and celebrations together. He worked as a plumber for various plumbing companies and later joined CP Rail Weston Shops for 14 years until his retirement on June 28, 1995. Alfred was a 55 year member of the German Society of Winnipeg and enjoyed his summers for over 40 years at Camp Neustadt. Alfred loved to travel. He and wife Ingrid made many trips back to Germany. They were also fortunate to vacation in Italy, the French Riviera, Switzerland, Austria, and Holland. They also travelled across Canada from coast to coast, with highlights being taking family from Germany to the Rocky Mountains. They also enjoyed car trips to Virginia and Washington, DC., the Badlands and Mount Rushmore, a bus trip through the Maritimes and a rail trip on the Rocky Mountaineer followed by an Alaskan cruise. Their favourite trips for the last 10 years were to winter in Honolulu, Hawaii, which became their second home. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they took a seven day Hawaiian Island cruise. Alfred was also a sports fan following the German Bundesliga Soccer league, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, as well as being a hockey fan. Alfred will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years Ingrid, and daughter Peggy, sister-in-law Maria Thomas, nieces Louise Forkheim and Rita (Charlie) Weppler and their families; and many dear friends. In Germany he is survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in law Renate and Richard Brands, Gustav and Erika Schons, Norbert and Barbel Lammering and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Luise, brother Rudy Thomas, brother-in-law Manfred Lammering and wife Maria. A celebration of Alfred's life will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut St. (corner Walnut and Wolseley) with Pastor Heimo Bachmeyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or St. Peter's Lutheran Church. We wish to sincerely thank the staff of N1North at Concordia Hospital during this difficult time. Although we grieve at his passing, his peace and the end of his suffering relieve us. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, So He closed His arms around you, And whispered Come to Me , You didn't deserve what you went through, So He took you home to rest, God's gardens must be beautiful, For He only takes the best Rest in Peace Arrangements entrusted to: KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson Hwy. 338-0331 Send expressions of sympathy at www.dignitymemorial.com/3752
