Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHOMAS NEIL PORTEOUS December 16, 1928 - June 28, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather Thomas Neil Porteous at the age of 81. Tom passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 28, 2010. Tom is survived by his three children, Greg, Susan (Rick) and Tim (Susan), his six grandchildren, Derek (Felecia), Ryan, Steven (Michelle), Jade, Matthew and Katerina and his two great-grandchildren Teagan and Mackinly. Tom is also survived by his brother Victor (Marion) and sisters Shirley and Donna (Jack) and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years Evelyn, his brother Ray, his sisters Irene and Joan and parents Stanley and Violet. Tom was born in Portage La Prairie in 1928 and moved with his family into Winnipeg in 1940. He began his career at CP Rail at the age of 15 as a call boy ; riding his bike to wake up the train crews. Tom met the love of his life, Evelyn, at the age of 19 and married her on August 7, 1948. Tom and Evelyn resided in Cowan for a short period after they first married but soon moved their family back to Winnipeg where Tom continued to work with CP Rail as a machinist until his retirement in 1986. At that point, Tom and Evelyn built their dream home in Dauphin. Tom thoroughly enjoyed retired life; he developed a love and tremendous talent for woodworking and would spend hours tending to his beautiful garden. Although he loved Dauphin, Tom moved back to Winnipeg last year to be closer to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tom was a tremendously loving husband, father and grandfather - he would often drive several hours just for a family BBQ or dinner, even in the middle of winter. The family sincerely thanks all of the homecare workers and the staff at the Tache Day Centre who helped with Tom's care this past year. He looked forward to Tuesdays and his visits with all of his new friends at the Tache Day Centre. Heartfelt and special thanks to Loretta, who always brought a little extra sunshine into Tom's days. Thank you to Tim and Suzie for all that you have done; you made a tremendous difference in the quality of life that Dad had this past year and we are all eternally grateful. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kidney Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba or other charity of your choice will be sincerely appreciated. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Monday, July 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Wheeler Funeral Chapel and Reception Centre, 211 Regent Avenue West.
