Benefits included Douglas sponsoring a five year old boy's education. Douglas spent time up north, in Churchill, MB, or Resolute Bay, NWT, as a flight service specialist/coast guard radio operator. He moved back home, to work with The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. A dedicated member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church, 600 Minto St., Doug's booming voice will be sorely missed. The Funeral Service was held Friday, October 1, 2010, with Pastor Nancy Walker, presiding. Douglas helped others, and was honoured by the Canadian Red Cross, with a Rescuer Award. He contributed to the Circus Mom/Daddy Club, and to the Annual MS Walk. When Douglas fell ill, he was rescued by Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services, and their Major Incident Response Vehicle. The staff of Victoria General Hospital Fifth Floor were very good at looking after him. The family appreciates their effort. Douglas eagerly anticipated The 100th Anniversary Weekend, of the Cameron Highlander Association, where he served as President, on October 22 to 24, 2010. Doug and I spent almost a year training as flight service specialists and coast guard radio operators. We were the last group to be trained in both disciplines, and the first to be trained at the Transport Canada Training Center. The training Center was along the St.Lawrence River in Cornwall, Ontario. We were in the class of 7903. (1979) In my car, Doug and I drove to Cornwall from Winnipeg to report for training. We also drove back to Winnipeg once training was complete. Doug was a happy, outgoing guy. He was a heavy set man but was in really good shape. He was a regular in the gym, weight room and swimming pool. He walked outside almost every day for additional exercise. He won a 40 day contest for consistant walking/running. Around thirty people, including me, were in the contest. One day, towards the end of the contest, it poured rain all day. I took one look outside and decided not to go….I figured Doug wasn’t going to walk in THAT either! Later in the evening I saw Doug walking in from outside soaking wet. He had done his walk. In the end he won the contest, walking all 40 days. I was second with 39 days.
