SUSAN JOAN POPESKI With her family at her side, Susan Joan Popeski passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on December 16, 2010. She leaves behind to mourn her passing, her sister Gerry (Monty) Lomow, her brother Paul (Joanne) Popeski, her adoring nephews Mark (Laura) Lomow and Jessie Popeski, and niece Jill (Trent Carroll) Lomow, as well as her beloved great-nieces Jordan Blair and Ashlee Carroll and great-nephews Brendan and Adam Lomow and Jett Carroll. She leaves behind many devoted friends. Susan was a teacher for 30 years - most of them spent within the school district of Seven Oaks. She loved teaching and was very involved with her students in school and in extra curricular activities. Of those years, five were devoted to the special ed program and one year as president of the Seven Oaks School Division Teachers Association. She greatly admired her colleagues and many of them became very close and were there for her to the very end. To Susan her nieces and grandnieces and nephews and grandnephews were like her children. Every one of them spent countless hours with her. She took them on trips, balloon rides, rewrote their essays and ate a great many McDonald's hamburgers. Theirs was truly a mutual admiration society. She loved cruising and reading science fiction and mystery novels. She was an admiring fan of Shakespeare and never failed to miss a production here or at Stratford (when time allowed). Her strength of character and moral standards along with a great sense of humour was admired by all. She will be forever missed and loved. Susan's funeral took place at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on December 19, 2010. Pallbearers were Larry Pudavick, Simon Simken, Mark Lomow, Monty Lomow, Ed Shinewald and Trent Carroll. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Grace Hospice staff, who were great comfort to us and Susan and allowed her to leave us with dignity.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Ms. Popeski was one of my favourite teachers growing up. She instilled a passion for books and reading, that I carry with me to this day. She was my fondest memory of Leila North School and I was so sorry to hear she was no longer with us. My sincere condolences. - Posted by: Zita De Sousa (Former Student ) on: Jul 14, 2016

  • Ms. Popeski spent a great deal of time helping me out at GCCI. I saw her probably 10-12 years ago at a McDonalds in the south end and I am very surprised and saddened to learn of her passing. She was a great person and a great dedicated teacher that made learning fun. I still remember how she read "The Jabberwocky" to me, she made it come alive. My condolences to her family. - Posted by: Jared Friedman (Student) on: Jul 14, 2014
