DORIS POYNTZ On a beautiful March 19, 2011 morning, Doris Poyntz passed away peacefully at Grace Hospital. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas Digby Poyntz (December 23, 1971). Born Doris Annetta Wilson, September 21, 1921, in Maple, Ontario, she was raised in Maple and Whitevale with her four brothers, Orval, Gord, Allie and Ken, and her sister Audrey. Doris' independent spirit took her from small town life to Toronto and Montreal, where she worked for Howard Smith Paper and The Canadian Bankers Association. It was in Montreal, where she met the love of her life, Tom, who proudly brought his new bride to Winnipeg. Doris loved her adopted city and was a proud Winnipegger. She enjoyed a full and active life with dinners at Rae and Jerry's, summers at Victoria Beach and theatre outings with her wide circle of friends. Her love of a good gin and tonic was legendary. Doris was generous, kind and a loyal friend. She was a loving and supportive mother to her son, Tom (Jeannine) and daughter, Leslie Anne (Andrew Cuthbertson). She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Doris' life will be at St. George's Anglican Church, 168 Wilton St., Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba; Winnipeg Humane Society or charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I met Doris in an unusual way in February 2003. I was on a flight to Montreal from Calgary via Winnipeg. Cold weather in Winnipeg caused the Air Canada onward flight to be cancelled. Passengers were in a long line and I turned around to gaze down at this beautiful smiling face of a stranger behind me. It was Doris. We comiserated for awhile and she immediately invited me to her apartment (she was 82 and I was 45) to while away the time. What risk she took and what hospitality! We booked later (and different) onward flights and hopped the taxi to her place. There she made a quick lunch and we had a delightful conversation (I recall her bragging about her place on Lake Winnipeg and her children). I marvelled at how warm and spunky this woman was. I'll never forget that 3 or 4 hours spent with her. Then I caught a taxi back to the airport and was off. I believe she left the next day. I wrote her a few times after and called her. She immediately remembered me and our short visit together. The last time I called was probably 4 years ago. I was very saddened to learn just today (I called her number and a company answered) that she passed away almost 3 years ago. What a wonderful, salt-of-the-earh, hospitable lady Doris Poyntz was. I will always remember her. Peter Bowal Calgary - Posted by: Peter Bowal (friend) on: Feb 27, 2014

  • I was greatly saddened to read of the death of your Mother, Tom and Leslie..and your families. Doris was a patient (Dr. Ramsay's office); a co-worker (Personnel Office) and a true friend. I was indeed in awe of Doris and was so pleased that she and I never lost touch. It was such a pleasure to meet with her when I went to Winnipeg and so privileged to have had a chat on the phone just after Christmas. She was truly a wonderful person who made my life better for having known her all these years. Kindest regards. - Posted by: Verna Johnston (Friend) on: Mar 26, 2011
