Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALVARO OLIVEIRA March 10, 1923 - April 19, 2011 Peacefully at the Pinawa Hospital with his family by his side. Left to carry on his legacy: his son Germano (Gertie), grandsons Richard, and Ryan (Melissa), great-grandson Austin, sister Margarida, brother Manuel along with numerous relatives in the U.S.A. and Winnipeg. Alvaro was predeceased by his wife Gabriela, their two daughters Louisa and Urania de Oliveira, his parents Maria and Antonio Oliveira, and sisters Maria de Rosario and Maria do Carmo. Alvaro was born in Livramento, Ponta Delgada, Açores. He enjoyed many years as an experienced tuba player, and later sousaphone player for the Uniao Fraternal band in Ponta Delgada. He shared this love of music with his family often adding tuba sounds to songs that were sung. He was employed as a ship welder and worked in the islands of Sao Miguel and Terceira. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1969. They moved to Whitemouth, Manitoba, joining other family members, and resided there for many years. He obtained employment as a Painter/Decorator working with his son and other family members for many years. He retired in 1988 and in 1993 he and Gabriela moved to Pinawa to be closer to their family. Alvaro's charmingly witty sense of humour provided many laughs over the years. The special twinkle in his eye was a sure indication he had something exciting to share. He reveled in sharing knowledge of his homeland and life experiences with his son and grandsons. His meticulous and continuous story telling provided them with an excellent family history. He also ensured they had a good grasp of the Portuguese language. They shared an extremely close bond. This family bond became extra special with the recent birth of his great-grandson Austin Miguel Alvaro. He was thrilled with this bundle of joy and honoured that he shared his name. Many thanks to the North Eastman Health Association, Home Care staff, Ambulance staff and Nursing staff at the Pinawa Hospital for their compassionate care. Cremation will take place and upon Alvaro's request a private family service will be held. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pinawa Hospital or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
