HARVEY BEEMER On Thursday November 24, 2011, Harvey Beemer, beloved husband of Maureen (Hosegood), finished his life's journey at Victoria General Hospital. Harvey was predeceased by his beloved first wife, Doreen (Reid), in 1982. Harvey was born September 3, 1926, to Russell and Mary (Pace) in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He is predeceased by his brothers Albert, Victor (Dorothy), Bud (Betty, Elizabeth), and Ronald (Dorothy). He is survived by his brother Arthur (Janet) of Kingston, Ontario. In 1945, Harvey graduated from Sault Ste. Marie High School. He worked briefly for the Algoma Steel Corporation, owned his own delivery company (Whizz Delivery) and taught in an one-room school house in Batchewana Bay, Ontario. In 1951 Harvey moved west to Winnipeg for a stint with The Beneficial Finance Company. It was upon coming to Winnipeg that Harvey met and married Doreen Elaine (Reid). They had three children. In 1958, Harvey moved from the auditor's department to the computer department at Great West Life. He worked for Great West until the summer of 1965, when he moved the family back east to Lucan, Ontario where he had taken a position with Canada Trust. The family did not linger long in Lucan, though, Harvey enjoyed the life of a country squire and his four acres of land. Doreen, being a true daughter of west Winnipeg, could not abide with the cows grazing on one side of the yard, and the piggery across the field. By the end of the summer he had moved the family into London, where they remained until 1967. The family moved back to Winnipeg on Grey Cup Day 1967. Harvey had been hired as computer manger for the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg. When Metro and the other municipalities merged in 1972, Harvey emerged as the Director of Computer Operations and Management Operations for the City of Winnipeg. He remained with the city until his retirement. In the late 60s and 70s, Harvey was active in the St. Vital Rotary Club. But for 25 years, Harvey was deeply involved with The Big Brothers of Winnipeg. Over the decades Harvey served as a mentor and friend to 14 boys. On two occasions, Harvey was selected as Big Brother of the year. Three of the little brothers evolved into virtual family, Robert Yonza (Gosia), Gerry Egan (Maria), and Christopher Giesbrecht. Harvey is survived by his three children, Donald, Cheryl DeVisser (Harvey) and Judi Brandson (Kelly); grandchildren, Kyle (Holly), Ryan Sly, Tyson, Erin Broadfoot (Keir), Reid Sly (Trish), Randi Sly (Kenneth), Caitlin White (Jr.), Maximilian and Alexandra; as well as his great-grandchildren Shianne, Hailey, Joshua, Hannah, Elliott, Maia, Ruari, Caius, Kylie, Brianna, and Jacob. In 2002, Harvey married Maureen, and together they shared laughter, lively conversation, companionship and a love of travel. Through Maureen, Harvey is survived by her children, Maureen, Garth (Karen); and her grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Alana, Lea, Evan and Jessie. The family invites Harvey's many friends to a celebration of his life Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue.
