Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN DEY WALKER March 22, 1912 - December 6, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the age of 99 years. Left to cherish John's memory are his son Robert (Cheryl); daughter Heather (Ted) Mackereth; grandchildren David, William (Beverly) of Yellowknife, NWT, Susan (Craig) Doell of Morden, MB and Laura (Dan) Good; great-grandchildren Alexander, Elizabeth, Emma, Ethan and Jack; sister Helen Carter; brother-in-law Lou Ducharme of Seattle, WA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene, December 11, 2007 after 71 years of marriage; brothers George and Wilf, and sisters Margaret, Hilda, Edna, Eleanor and Audrey. Dad grew up in the North End and attended St. John's High School. He began his working career with the Winnipeg Electric Company. Following service in the Canadian Army during the Second World War he returned to that position until the Manitoba Hydro Electric Board was created where he was an original employee. When the Hydro Electric Board was merged with the Manitoba Power Commission, Dad became Hydro's first Purchasing Agent at a time when many new hydro electric power projects were undertaken. Dad finished his career at Hydro as the Executive Assistant to the General Manager. After retirement Mom and Dad moved to Victoria, BC in 1975, returning back to Winnipeg in 1994. Dad was a member of many organizations during his working life, including the Assiniboine Lodge; Scottish Rite; the Navy League of Canada where he served a term as president; and the Purchasing Agents Association of Manitoba. As well Dad was a charter member of The Rotary Club of Fort Garry, which he also served a term as president. Dad we will always remember you, We will always have you in our hearts, And we will always love you. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the City of Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service, the doctors, nurses and support staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency; Medical ICU; and 6E for their compassionate care. A special thank you to Dr. Roy Smith for his care to both Mom and Dad over the last 17 years. In keeping with Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. A private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Division of The Canadian Diabetes Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the United Way.
