EDITH ANNE KUSHNERYK It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Edith Kushneryk after a short illness on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the age of 98 years. Edith was predeceased by her husband John, infant son John, son-in-law David Kinash and grandson Darren Kinash. Edith will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Valerie Grainger; son-in-law Ken McAlpine; nephews Bill Kushneryk (Janet) and Ron Kushneryk (Bev) as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. Edith was born in Brighton, England on February 12, 1913. She lost her parents at a young age and grew up in an orphanage. After leaving the orphanage at 18 she was employed as a nanny, a maid worked in a bomb factory and eventually served on the Naffy Canteen on Brighton Pier during the Second World War where she met her husband, John. In 1946, Edith came to Canada as a war bride with her infant daughter. When her husband died in 1983 she took over as superintendant of the Pullmer Apartments. She took great pride in her job as caretaker and worked diligently from morning until night to keep the block spotless. She was very protective of her tenants and went above and beyond for them. She took care of their pets when they were absent, watered plants and made home cooked meals for some of the student tenants who were away from home. Many of her tenants were extremely fond of her and had great respect for Edith, keeping in touch with her over the years even though they had long since moved out. She remained at the Pullmer until the age of 96 years when she had a small stroke and finally had to retire. She then moved to assisted living and eventually into Hugo Convalescent Home where she was still unable to rest and wanted to keep busy cleaning. The family would like to thank all of the staff and doctors of emergency and the fourth floor at the Victoria Hospital who did everything they could to make Mom as comfortable as possible. A special thanks as well to the staff at the Hugo Convalescent Home who were so very kind, concerned and made Mom's stay there more at ease. Cremation has taken place and a gathering celebrating Mom's life will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street.
