COSMO NOCIDA It is with sad and heavy hearts that the Nocida Family announce the passing of Cosmo Nocida on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the age of 86. Dad was surrounded by his loving family throughout his illness and most importantly at the moment of his peaceful passing. Dad will be lovingly remembered and missed by his caring wife Domenica of 54 years. He leaves his four children: Maria (Agostino) Torchia, Vincenzo (Sabrina) Nocida, Carmelina (Tony) Buccini and Giuseppina (Lance) Shaw. Also surviving and cherishing Nonno's memories are his 10 precious grandchildren: James (Jody), Joseph (Costanza), Jonathan and Nicholas (Torchia); Elysia and Olivia (Nocida); Ariana and Angelica (Buccini); and Domenica and Juliana (Shaw). Surviving him are his sisters Grazia (Armando) and Caterina Nocida and brother Domenico (Grazia) and his brothers-in-law Francesco Foti (Antonella) and Arcangelo Foti (Olga) and sister-in-law Caterina (Annunziato). Dad also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy. Cosmo was predeceased by his brother Annunziato; sister and brothers-in-law Domenico and Carmela Militano; and Sebestiano Fucile. Dad was born in Cosoleto, (RC) Italy on November 6, 1925, one of five children, to Maria (nee Zoccoli) and Vincenzo Nocida. Dad spent his childhood and earlier life journeys learning and employing his agricultural skills in the community. It was exciting listening to stories about his native birthplace. Dad spent a brief period working in southern France which he spoke about fondly. Dad was proud to have served in the Italian Army. In 1957 he wed Domenica Foti and shortly after they set sail to start a new life in Canada. They arrived in Halifax in August 1958 and eventually settled and developed roots in Winnipeg. Dad was an industrious person and shortly upon his arrival in Winnipeg he found employment in the construction industry. Eventually, he developed a passion for wood working and spent the balance of his career in this field. Dad was a simple but very wise man. He was a man of principal who promoted the philosophy of doing the right thing. He was a man of few words and when he spoke, it was with purpose and meaning. Dad had a very strong faith and rarely missed Sunday Mass up until his illness. He was a long standing member with the Knights of Columbus. Dad took great pleasure in the outdoors. Some of his favourite activities included: gardening, hunting, wood working and winemaking. The family has fond memories of all these colourful activities and how they brought joy to him. Unquestionably, the greatest pleasure of all was his love for his family. The joy and happiness he received from spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren is infinite. Dad's eyes sparkled when surrounded by his family and he always looked forward to family gatherings. The family would like to acknowledge and extend a heartfelt thank you to all of Dad's home care workers and the medical staff at the St. Boniface Hospital for all the care and compassion shown to our father and family throughout his illness. A viewing will be held at Holy Rosary Church on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 to celebrate his life. Entombment will follow in the Chapel Mausoleum at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. Pallbearers will be Nonno's loving grandchildren. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Dad's wishes, donations may be made in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6.
