JOHANNA CORNELIA WINCH (nee SCHOONDERBEEK) January 18, 1925 - January 15, 2012 Peacefully on Sunday, January 15, Johanna passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 86. Predeceased by her husband Ron; siblings, Joop, Rie and Rinus; granddaughter Jaime; Mom will be remembered in the thoughts of sons, Kim, Norm and daughter-in-law Heather with their sons, Chris and Sean; brother Piet of the Netherlands; numerous nieces and nephews in the Netherlands and around the globe. Mom was born in Haarlem, Netherlands and unfortunately lost both of her parents at the age of eight. A survivor from early on, Mom and her siblings developed a strong bond that endured throughout the years. Surviving the Second World War and living under the rule of occupation forces, Mom set out by ship to come to Canada and Winnipeg in the late 1940s. Here she met her future husband Ron and they married March 24, 1950. They remained married until Dad's death in 1977. Throughout her years in Winnipeg, Mom worked at Walter Woods, Manitoba Commercial College and for many years at Eaton's. Upon retirement, Mom moved to Campbell River on Vancouver Island where she spent 15 fun filled years with a diverse cast of characters. She made many friends in the region and particularly enjoyed time spent on Cortes Island with the Campbell's and all the other great folks who made her a part of their families. The lure of family and specifically grandchildren brought Mom back to Winnipeg in 1995. She was a great babysitter and spent countless hours of quality time with both Chris and Sean. Mom was the type of person who was generous to a fault. She always thought of others first and could always be relied upon to take people shopping, on trips all over the countryside, cook for them when they were sick and generally do whatever people needed. While still living at home, our house was a mecca for all of our friends and it wasn't unusual to have 20 or 30 friends at parties in the basement where Mom would cook for all of us. She took all these times in stride and if you went home hungry it was your own fault. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. A private family interment will take place in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Our family would like to acknowledge the doctors, nurses and all the other health care professionals on 5B at the St. Boniface Hospital. They do great things in the face of over-whelming situations and help ease the strain on families. In lieu of flowers, we urge folks to donate, should they feel compelled to the St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Mrs. Winch was most in her element with a diverse cast of characters around her (including all her sons' friends). I have shared many years of joy and laughter with her and her family. Everyone that was ever in her home knows that all were treated like family. She was a happy, generous spirit (she once drove me to LAX to catch a flight!) who loved life and found the humour in every day. That is truly a gift. - Posted by: Gary Roberts (family friend) on: Jan 19, 2012

  • Jo was a "True Mom" and what I most remember was that she was always trying to get me to eat something that she had just whipped up. A good Person. - Posted by: Bill Graham (Friend) on: Jan 18, 2012

  • OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY. - Posted by: GORDON AND JUNE BELL (FRIEND) on: Jan 18, 2012

  • I'll remember Mrs. Winch as someone who never waited for the storm to pass, but was always seen dancing in the rain. - Posted by: Victor Danyliuk () on: Jan 18, 2012
