ELAINE SOROKOWSKI (nee KAZIMIR) Elaine Mae Sorokowski passed away peacefully on January 19, 2012, at the age of 64 years. She will be missed by her husband, best friend, lover and confidante of 46 years, Walter Michael Sorokowski; her son Michael (Ginny), daughter Jacqueline (Chris); and grandsons: Devon, Joel and Zackary. Also left to mourn are her mother Stella; brothers, Nicholas (Sue) and Daniel (Jannie); brothers-in-law, Tony (Irene), Joseph (Jennie); and sisters-in-law, Eleanor (Ernie), Diane (Don), Julia (Bob) and Virginia (Chris); as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Walter and brother Leslie. Elaine was born in Arborg, Manitoba on April 24, 1947 where she was raised and lived till she married. She attended St. Benedict's Catholic School from Grades 1 to 8. She later attended the Arborg Collegiate High School for Grades 9 to 12, graduating in 1965. During her school years, some of her interests included violin, Highland Dancing, Track and Field, sprinting and Figure Skating. Elaine married Walter on November 27, 1965 and gave birth to Michael in June of 1966 and Jacqueline in October of 1967. Elaine spent her first years of marriage as a domestic engineer (or stay-at-home mom) and later, when her children were a little older, decided to pursue her passion as an artist. She enrolled in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba and graduated with a major in Graphic Design, and a minor in Sculpture. This education gave Elaine the opportunity to work at the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature on the Boreal Forest Gallery displays, where some of her work is still displayed. She also taught evening classes in adult art education for the Transcona School Division for about 14 years. She spent many years honing her artistic skills and experiencing life through her art. When Walter officially retired, they spent their winters in Texas, where her art became jewellry. That is when everyone could enjoy a piece of her passion and wear it with pride, especially when you knew her. Her artwork was her passion and God-given talent. She expressed it in everything that she did from her paintings and sculptures, to her jewellry designs and decorating her home, to even her hand-made Birthday and special occasion cards, which were loved by everyone who received them. God had truly given her a gift, which will be missed by all who had the pleasure to experience it! Thanks to Dr. P. Harris, Dr. L. Homick and the Concordia Hospital staff at Ward 3W, Oncology Clinic and N1 South Wing for their compassionate care throughout the entire ordeal. A special thanks to sister-in-law Julia, who was like a sister to Elaine and provided her with many very happy times discussing jewellry making, as well as shopping for jewellry supplies during their stay in Texas the past several years. And thanks to the family, friends and neighbours for their care packages and moral support during our difficult times. In keeping with Elaine's wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., in the Blessed Sacrament Church, 710 Roanoke St., Winnipeg, MB. Flowers gratefully declined. For those who wish, donations can be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Avenue, Room ON1160, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9 or to the charity of one's choice. Mass offerings can also be made at Blessed Sacrament Church. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald Street 253-5086 ejcoutu.com
