Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROLAND H. LANTHIER 1927 - 2012 It is with great sadness that the family of Rollie Lanthier announces his sudden passing on January 12, 2012, at the age of 84 years. He will be greatly missed by his wife Mona (nee Bell); his son Rob, wife Jill and their sons Marc and Shane; his son Richard and his daughter Leah; as well as his granddaughter Irene. He is also survived by his sister Julie and husband Phil Pochailo and many nieces and nephews. Rollie was predeceased by his parents James and Mary Lanthier, brother Rudy, sister Yvette, and dear son Randy. Rollie spent virtually his whole life in Winnipeg and came to know many in the community through sports (hockey, baseball and football) and through his business interests in hardware, sporting goods and real estate. Rollie enjoyed daily walks and tending to his yard and garden, as he loved the outdoors. He especially doted on his four grandchildren who were treated to his love of fishing and the outdoors in general. According to Rollie's wishes, a private family gathering was held to celebrate his life. I am greatly sorry to hear of our loss of Mr Lanthier. My Grandfather was a long time neighbour of Mona and Rollies. I still have many great memories of life on the cresent. As a young boy visiting my grandfather I remember playing on that rusty old swing set. I loved that swing set. I also remember jumping over my grandfathers fence into Lanthiers back yard and going for a swim in their pool (this was before they had the pool removed of course). I always thought I got away with it until Mr Lanthier would bring me a towel and a glass of juice. As an adult I still would take a drive though the cresent, long after my grandfathers passing and like many of you, see the Lanthiers tending to their yard. I would always stop and visit, even if it was beief. The Lanthiers have a great place in my heart, and the fantastic memories they gave me of my childhood. Mr Lanthier will be truely missed. Sincerly, Dan Hudson. - Posted by: Dan Hudson (Neighbor) on: May 21, 2012

Rollie was a friend, he helped me in business, in personal matters fishing, the outdoors, but most of all he taught me how to be a better person. We spent hours, days in his old fishing boat. I learned more there than in school. I liken him to my father, I will miss you Rollie. Lenny Giacomin. - Posted by: lenny giacomin (friend fishing partiner. my mentor.) on: Feb 05, 2012

I, too, was very sad to hear of Mr. Lanthier's passing. He was a Victoria Crescent staple. When I think of walking or biking past the Lanthier's I always remember Mona and Rolly working in the yard, keeping the place spotless. They always had time to say hello and have a visit and express interest in our lives. Lori (Kane) Young and I have shared our memories of Mr. Lanthier this past week. They are remarkably similar - about his warmth and friendliness. My thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Janet (Ramsay) Goddard (neighbour) on: Jan 27, 2012

My deepest condolences to the Lanthier family. I have many fond memories of growing up on Victoria Row and many of them directly linked to the Lanthier family. Sunny afternoons spent by the pool with either Mr. or Mrs Lanthier watching over Richard and I or playing football/baseball in the back yard and the street hockey games. There were the afternoons spent in the breezeway playing Monopoly hoping for a glimpse of the infamous boat to drive by the picture in the window of the the garage. I remember seeing Mr. Lanthiers car warming up in the driveway on those cold winter mornings and me carefully timing my walk out of the bush behind the Barkers to coincide with Mr. Lanthier driving by. I am sure he was on to my little trick but would always pick me up and make those cold walks to school a little shorter. Mr. Lanthier was always kind and encouraging to me as I was growing up and was always the one to phone to let us know that Kojak had gotten out of the dog run again and had just ran by. Thank you Mr and Mrs Lanthier for being so kind over the years. - Posted by: Bill Kane (Friend & Neighbor ) on: Jan 23, 2012

Rollie was a man who was kindness personified. In this world where people contact is minimal, Rollie would always be sending a wave over the fence or asking about how my health was or how the girls were doing. When my brother and his family were away we could count and depend on Rollie to make sure everything was ok. I am truly saddened for you Mona because you made a wonderful couple. God needed a special Angel and has only borrowed Rollie from you. Our prayers are with you. - Posted by: Teresa, Ally and Marika Letwin (The sister of their neighbour Mark.) on: Jan 23, 2012

Victoria Crescent in the 1960s was a much different neighbourhood from how it appears now. But in spite of all the changes, one family represents a connection with our past more, perhaps, than any other. Amidst the forest of mega-houses that have replaced many of the original homes, the Lanthier's bungalow at the foot of Victoria Row stands as a reminder of a growing up in a very special place surrounded by very special people. Rollie Lanthier was one of those people. As a child, I looked up to him and as an adult, I came to embrace him as a good friend - although I always addressed him as "Mr. Lanthier", such was my respect for him. Each time I passed through the city, I would visit the Crescent, and often would find Rollie puttering away in his garden. I will hold his memory close. - Posted by: Dunc Malcolm (Neighbour) on: Jan 21, 2012

Mona and Family, I was so saddened to hear of Uncle Rolly's passing. He was such a well liked, respected man and I know Don thought very highly of his Uncle. My love and thoughts are with you. Myrna - Posted by: Myrna Lanthier () on: Jan 21, 2012
