Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS (DOUG) SAMUEL HANCOCK Doug quietly passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on Monday, January 23, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was 82 years old and would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on July 1. He always insisted the country had that holiday because he was born that day. Doug grew up in Elmwood attending Lord Selkirk High School and obtained his R.I.A degree (now C.M.A.) at night through the University of Manitoba. During this time he enjoyed playing lacrosse and fastball. Doug spent the majority of his career at Honeywell Controls where he worked his way up to become the Western Regional Manager of Canada. He retired in 1990 at the age of 60. After Doug retired he volunteered for several years at Stony Mountain Correctional Centre as a community liaison. He also enjoyed his time delivering hampers for the Christmas Cheer Board and visiting St. Stephen's Church members who were unable to attend services. Doug was a longstanding member of the Every Second Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club which was a gathering of men who grew up in Elmwood. He was the Newsletter editor, took pleasure in pouring the coffee for all the attendees and was usually equipped with a joke to start the morning club off. Doug also enjoyed curling in the 50+ men's league at Rossmere Country Club. Summer holidays were spent with his family at Victoria Beach where he enjoyed many friends and playing golf and tennis. Doug was the president of the Victoria Beach Club for several years, volunteered numerous hours with the Victoria Beach Tennis Club and was ultimately awarded the Vilis Anson Memorial Volunteer of the Year Trophy in 2008 along with his wife Lillian. During retirement, winters were first spent travelling the world with Lillian and in later years relaxing in Fort Myers, Florida where he met many new friends, played tennis, bridge, shuffleboard, dominos and hosting his family. Doug was a devoted, loving and proud grandfather who attended every concert and recital his granddaughters performed in. Doug is survived by his wife Lillian, of almost 57 years; sons Brian (Ana), Brent, Bruce (Lynn), and daughter Maureen. He also cherished his two wonderful granddaughters Daniele and Kendra. Doug will also be greatly missed by his sister Dorothy McNabb and husband John as well as many nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his father Noel Henry, mother Ethel Irene, brother Reg, sister-in-law Elsie, and precious grandson Matt. While we will miss you in many ways Dad, we will remember you in so many more. Donations may be made to the St. Stephen's Anglican Fund or the charity of choice. Flowers are gratefully declined. Funeral service to be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Stephen's Anglican Church located at 220 Helmsdale Ave. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. We were sorry to hear of Doug's passing. Our family always appreciated the support from Doug and Lillian for our Dad during his later years at Victoria Beach. Doug especially could be counted on to show up very regularly to check on how things were going, and Dad would inform us of the latest news that Doug had provided. He was one of Dad's friends that always had time to spend. - Posted by: Gary and Penny Gilmour (friends from Victoria Beach) on: Jan 29, 2012

Hancock family, Our sincere condolences. I will miss Doug at the tennis courts but feel very fortunate to have known him for many years, good laughs and a few words of advice (his, not mine). The fondest of memories. Matt & family - Posted by: Matt heiman (Friend) on: Jan 28, 2012

It was with sadness and many fond memories that I read this notice of Doug's passing. Growing up with my family at Victoria Beach, the Hancock Family was a known and so appreciated positive force in the community. My parents Iris and George had a closer connection through the Victoria Beach Tennis. They had many, many wonderful times with Doug, drawn together by a love of the sport, of the beach and of sportsmanship. Doug will be sorely missed and long remembered. My sincere sympathy to family and friends. - Posted by: Kimberley Nemrava (nee Gilmour) (Friend and neighbour at Victoria Beach) on: Jan 28, 2012
