VIOLET POGSON Violet Pogson passed away January 16, 2012 at the good old age of 84, peacefully and surrounded by her children. Violet May Cecelia Henderson was a Canadian war bride having met her husband William Harvey Pogson during his training at Fort William, Ontario, during the Second World War. They married in 1945 upon his return to Canada. They farmed near Crystal City, Manitoba until 1952 when they moved to Winnipeg for better employment and educational opportunities for their children. They had five children: Phyllis, Thelma, Robert, Alan and George. For a time, the family lived near Inwood so that the children could experience rural living. Later, upon Harvey's retirement due to health, they moved to Mather where the family had its roots on Harvey's side. Harvey died in 1985. Violet was a voracious reader and all the children learned to read at a young age and always had books to read. Violet was a good cook and collected recipes from every source. Combined with garden-grown food, farm animals and gathered fruit and nuts, her family always ate well. When the family lived in the city and the children were old enough to take care of themselves, she worked at Economy Textiles, Quality Bed and Spring and Walmart earning money to buy groceries for the family. Education was a priority for Violet and Harvey. All family activities were coordinated around schooling. Vacations were in summer when school was out. Lights out was early on school nights . There was always a quiet flat spot for homework and local libraries were visited regularly. Three of the five children became teachers, one a nurse and another provided services to students and staff at University of Manitoba. Violet was a good mother and gave all her children a good start in life. That legacy lives on in eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. There was a graveside ceremony for family members in Mather on Saturday, January 21, 2012.
