CATHERINE MARIE CARON With close friends and husband at her side, Catherine Marie Caron, Mrs. Caron, has been called to heaven. Cathy leaves to mourn her mother Sadie (Sofie); brother Terry, wife Clare, their children Josh, Matt and Nick; brother Donald, wife Betty, their children Colin, Ryan and Trina; brother Sandy, wife Olla; sister Barb, husband Wayne, their children Luke and Jill; sister Rose (Pugs), husband Mike, their children Hannah, Madelyn and Thomas; brother Gerard, wife Tracy, their children Bradley and Mark; sister Jackie, husband Donald, their children Chris and Angus; husband Jim, and everyone whose life Cathy touched. Cathy was predeceased by her nephew Connor, father Donald, grandparents Ena Mae, Michael, Catherine and Alexander, father-in-law Ernest and mother-in-law Teena. On April 27 1959 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Cathy was the third child born to Sadie and Donald Kennedy. She was raised on a dairy farm just outside of the small community of St. Andrews. With no electronics and only two channels of black and white TV, outdoor sports were the norm. Many hours were spent on the homemade rink playing hockey with her brothers and sisters, fine tuning Cathy's skills. Softball was to become one of Cathy's sports and shortstop was her position. In one of those years, Cathy was voted All Canadian . When Cathy's not so sports minded husband Jim asked someone about that, they replied it meant she was the best shortstop in all of CANADA. Not a bad accomplishment. Basketball wasn't on Cathy's mind yet but it was looming. Cathy graduated from St. Francis Xavier University (X) in 1981 with a physical education degree. Nova Scotia's newest teacher was setting out to conquer the world. With not a lot of job prospects in Nova Scotia, Cathy looked west as a lot of other east coasters have. When asked about that, her future husband Jim, they were dating then, would say that Cathy had a vision of a lineman who worked for Manitoba Hydro and she followed that vision. Cathy landed in September in the Island Lake area in a place called Garden Hill. Why there? She liked the name. Sounded nice she said. A little before that September, Jim also decided to go north for a second time. Maybe he had a vision to. A couple years in Garden Hill and Cathy and Jim's fate was sealed. Another chapter in Cathy's life was started. Cathy and Jim married on August 4, 1984 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. A trip to Churchill, Manitoba was next where Cathy taught all sports. There was something about that basketball though. It's day was coming. When it was time to move south, Cathy applied for a job at the small 200 or so student school of St. Emile. It was not known then but St. Emile's basketball machine was about to be unleashed. Between the years 1991 to 2010, with a couple years not coaching basketball, the St. Emile Saints, now called Huskies, had 14 first places, five finalist places, an amazing record that may not be broken for a while. The thousand or so slurpee's bought by the technical coordinator were said to have also contributed. Basketball or not, Mrs. Caron loved each and everyone of you students with all her heart. She wanted you to strive to always do your best. Make her proud, she will be watching. Future plans of retirement back home in Nova Scotia were not to be though, as God called Cathy home on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Timothy Church, 135 John Forsyth Road on Saturday February 11 at 11:00 a.m. Funeral Arrangements in care of WHEELER FUNERAL CHAPEL 211 REGENT AVE. Cathy was an amazingly talented teacher who knew how to reach her students. She was a respected educator, mentor, coach and colleague. I always looked forward to recess or lunch breaks to hear her tell stories or poke fun at other teachers - me included! May the Lord be with her always, God Bless. - Posted by: Reald (Colleague) on: Feb 15, 2012

Mrs Caron was such an amazing and beautiful person. She was an amazing teacher who gave you tough love but it's the best thing to give you. She has made me strive to be a better person and to accomplish what I am today. She wrote in my grad album I will always believe in you and I am so blessed for that. - Posted by: Megan () on: Feb 14, 2012

My sincerest condolences to Mr. Caron, Cathy's family and everyone who loved her. I am so grateful that I was able to see her right before I departed for Europe in September while picking up my cousins from school. I told her about my future plans, and she, as always was so encouraging and excited for me. She was simply the best teacher, mentor and friend to all her students. I will never forget early morning basketball practices, our entire class slurpee trips but most importantly the individual guidance she gave to each and every one of her students. Mrs. Caron will never be forgotten, and loved by so many (including myself) forever. - Posted by: Meaghan Glidden (Former Student & Basketball Player) on: Feb 12, 2012

It was with great sadness that I read the news of Mrs. Caron's passing. I had only just made contact with her in the past year for the first time since leaving St Emile and was so impressed she remembered me after more than 20 years. That's the kind of person she was though. I will never forget her passion for teaching and for sports. She brought out the best in everyone and to this day I always tell people she had more influence on me than any other teacher. Whilst completing my architecture degree, I remember one of my professors commenting on how good my grammar was. It was all down to Mrs. Caron. I am sorry I couldn't keep quiet at times in your classes but I did learn so much, and more than just sharp grammar skills. Rest in peace Mrs. Caron. - Posted by: Andrew Vincent (former student 88/89) on: Feb 11, 2012

I was very young when I met Cathy, she was the best gym teacher I ever had. Cathy worked with my parents in Garden Hill. She touched the lives of many people on our reserve and she will be missed by many people in our community. Many of her former students credit her great athletic skills/teaching in shaping them into the athletes they become. My sincerest condolences from the Little family, and from the people of your first places you would call home in the north... Garden Hill. - Posted by: Simon Little (former student(Garden Hill first Nation)) on: Feb 11, 2012

Mrs. Caron was a phenomenal teacher and basketball coach who was encouraging and pushed us to be at our best in academics, behavior and sports. Our grammar lessons, readiness and discipline that we received in her class was so valuable and was well noticed by future teachers that we had throughout our high school years. As well, it was an honor to play on her basketball team. My sister and I both were successful on the court during high school and played for the provincial team at one point. All of our success on the court, and discipline comes from our roots and we attribute them to Mrs. Caron. She has impacted our lives so much and for that we have always appreciated her and she will never be forgotten. Jim and the Kennedy family, our condolences. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and Mrs. Caron. - Posted by: Pradip, Fe, Janey, Kim and Neal: (friends/former teacher/basketball coach) on: Feb 11, 2012

Cathy was one of those people that has touched our hearts and the hearts of anyone who has had the privilage of getting to know her. She always inspired her students to be the best they could be. It has been an honor to call her friend. She was such a positive upbeat kind generous friendly person and we will miss her tremendously....she will always be in our hearts...Gone but not forgotten. - Posted by: Bryce Brenda Sean Justin Simes and Chris and Jenna Pollins (former students & family/friends) on: Feb 10, 2012

It is with sadness that we received the news of Cathy's untimely passing.I would like to express my condolences to Jim, the Kennedy Family, as well as to the staff and students of St. Emile school. Growing up In Nova Scotia in our younger years and throughout our educational years, we all soon became friends with Cathy, how could you not. She was truly a sweetheart, a unique person whose approach to each day was full of kindness, love for life, positive thinking, and some mischief tossed in there as well. I as many played sports with Cathy and yes Harold David I agree looking back she certainly was the most talented athlete around, made us all try harder to keep up to her standard. I read all the comments in "rate my teacher" and as I read I could see that Cathy's students as well saw the goodness, kindness, and preciousness of our sweet friend and she was as important to them as they were to her. We had many a laugh together growing up at school and although time passes and childhood friends get separated as we all follow our individual dreams we are all comforted by memories and they seem just like yesterday and we smile ....thank you Cathy you made us smile alot ! Even with tears in our eyes this day thinking back on memories one cannot help but smile as we wipe the tears from our cheek. Claire ( ridge) - Posted by: Claire McLean (friend) on: Feb 10, 2012

Our sincere condolences to Jim and Cathy's family. My sincere and deepest condolences go out to Jim, Cathy's relatives and friends, past and present staff and students of St. Emile school. I was so very fortunate to have worked with Cathy at St. Emile, and will always treasure all my fond memories of her. She always knew how to liven up the staff room with her playful nature and good-natured ribbing. Cathy had an infectious energy and genuine love of teaching. She will be sadly missed, never forgotten, and cherished always. - Posted by: Karen (Luba) Betz and family (colleague and friend) on: Feb 10, 2012

We are extremely saddened by the news of Cathy's passing. Cathy had a unique and wonderful relationship with her students and their families. She expected the best from our sons and she got it because they respected and loved her; deservingly so. She made school and trips a positive, fun experience, my sons will never forget. We are all blessed to have known her. Our prayers are with Jim, family and friends. - Posted by: Kardy, Kyle, Kevin, Tammy & Mike Solmundson ((students & family)) on: Feb 10, 2012

During one of our basketball games, Mrs. Caron was sick so she was watching from the sidelines. I thought I had played alright during the first half, but I was clearly not playing my best according to her. She came right up to me and encouraged me (in that authoritative voice of hers) to try harder. Of course, in the second half of the game, I scored many points. Mrs. Caron thank you for inspiring me to be the best that I could be, in life and as a basketball player. Mr. Caron, I'm so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: Rachel Konrad (Student) on: Feb 10, 2012

It is with great shock and sadness that we heard of Cathy's passing. The tributes to Cathy are wonderful and well justified as we can see. We did know of the true feelings that Cathy had for her fellow teachers and her deep feelings for all her students. She will be missed but certainly kept close in their hearts. Cathy's inspiration will live on in those that were close to her. To Cathy's family, she spoke of back home often and loved the time that she spent with each of you. That will never go away. To Jim, we are so sorry for your loss. We know that Cathy will forever be with you and may your happy memories help to comfort you. cousin, Doug & Linda Pelletier - Posted by: Doug & Linda Pelletier (Jim's cousin) on: Feb 10, 2012

Mrs. Caron brought out the best in people. As was the case with me. I always gave one hundred percent in her class. I don't know if I was scared of what might happen if I failed to complete a homework assignment or if I just didn't want to dissappoint her. Either way, the end result of my time spent in her classroom would prove to be the most productive and impacting years of my education. Mrs. Caron is perhaps the best teacher I ever had and I think she knows that. (She would probably break out her red pen on this tribute in a few places if she could.) You will be missed by many fellow students who I'm sure would share my sentiments. - Posted by: Colin Sigsworth (Student) on: Feb 09, 2012

My sympathy to Jim and the family. I would love to chat with Cathy's mom while she is here in Winnipeg. Had the phone number but misplaced it. Talked to my mom this a.m. who said she had spoken to Cathy's brother in St. Andrews. He was leaving for Winnipeg today so I couldn't get a number from him. Would love it if Mrs. Kennedy could give me a call at 668-1986 here in Winnipeg. - Posted by: Peggy Smith (My mom(Annie Deyoung) is a friend of Mrs. Sadie Kennedy.) on: Feb 09, 2012

Words cannot express my feeling of sadness towards Cathy's passing. I had the pleasure of being her friend and team mate on the Antigonish Kell's Angels Softball Team. She was the best. The Mass in St. Andrews was wonderful and gave me a chance to go over my fond memories of Cathy and the good times we had. To Sadie, brothers and sisters, and Jim, I express my deepest sympathy. I was deeply shocked when I read the obituary for Cathy. I well remember her as the star of our Nova Scotia teams in softball. She played on the National teams in St. Catharines, Moncton, Regina and Canada Games in St. John's (where she was an All-Star). Cathy was a truly wonderful person. A country girl who was never intimidated by anyone. She was a real pleasure to coach and to have on the team. Cathy has always been a good friend and neighbor. She was always full of energy and had a heart of gold. We will miss her at our front yard gatherings this summer and all of the male neighbors will miss her jovial ribbing. We will miss her biscuits too. Our condolences go out to Jim and Cathy's family. Condolences Jim, Sadie and family. I grew up with Cathy in our young years as a close by neighbor and classmate. I can't count the number of times we would meet at the local pond in Glen Roy and play hockey to all hours or in the summer play ball. I firmly believe that she was the most talented female athlete around in those sports. Above all I remember her as a kind and caring soul. Rest in peace Cathy. - Posted by: Harold Chisholm () on: Feb 08, 2012

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Mrs. Caron. She was my Grammar teacher in grade 7, my teacher in grade 8, and my basketball coach (champions for 2 years!) in grade 6, 7, and 8, while I was attending St. Emile. What a wonderful woman - she was determined to push you to your full potential, and knew that each one of us had the ability to succeed if we did so. Mrs. Caron was one of the most influential people in my life, and I will always be grateful to her for believing in me, pushing me, teaching me, and so much more. To Jim and the Kennedy family, I knew Cathy in high school and remember her as being such a friendly and kind soul. She played volleyball on the team that I was the manager for. The news of her death was received with a great deal of sadness. Last evening members of her: family, friends, and people from her community gathered in St. Andrews Church for a memorial Mass. In the crowd were at least two of her coaches, among many others whose lives she touched. I hope that the support that was (is) so evident will somehow touch your hearts as you grieve her loss. Cathy was a true friend. She had a heart of gold and had more energy than anyone I ever knew. As a softball player she was on many provincial teams and could play with the best in Canada. Cathy did her practice teaching under me in Sussex, N.B. and she was loved by the teachers and students. I will always remember that big smile, the twinkle in her eyes and her big dimples.
