Barrie and I knew each other for years. I met him when we moved to Ashdale Ave. in 1954. We attended Queen Elizabeth School and Nelson McIntyre Collegiate together. I was very grateful to him for checking in with my mom and sister when I was away at school. He was a caring and compassionate man and he looked after his friends. He also was a great help to me when I was first learning how to use a computer. He was patient (which I was not) and told me that when I became frustrated I should turn the computer off rather than punching the keyboard! I will miss his emails and Skyping with him once he became too ill to get around much. My thoughts and condolences to his family. - Posted by: Diane Biehl (friend) on: May 02, 2012

Linda, Todd and Erin: We are very sorry to learn of Barrie's unexpected passing. He was a very good uncle to me, my sisters and Zoe. I have many fond memories of being in Winnipeg and you out in Vancouver with Barrie. It would have be nice to have seen him in person again. We had kept in touch this last year or so via Skype. I was able to gave him a virtual tour from his man cave of our humble place in London; and more duct tape and tips for his computer. It had meant a lot to Katherine that your Dad made it all the way to our wedding celebration in Vancouver. Sadly we will not be able to make it from Europe to Winnipeg with air ticket availability. I realize this is so much to take in at the moment and Katherine's and my thoughts are of Barrie and you. Kindest Regards, Steven S. We all grew up together in Norwood, went to Nordale School, QE, and then on to Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Though Barrie was one of the oldest boys in the neighborhood, he knew us all and was such fun and always had a big kind hello for everyone. I remember hearing him laughing & talking in the halls when we walked into the last Nelson Mac Reunion; everyone knew his happy, booming voice and laugh. He emailed me and we talked a few years ago when his daughter was driving with friends to California as he knew I lived out west and could he please give his daughter my phone # and email if she happened to need it in their travels. What a great dad, always the protector as he had been to the kids in the flats when we were young. My deepest sympathies to Linda, the children and grandchildren and to his brother John and sisters Barbara and Linda. Barrie was a Norwood boy through and through, loved his neighborhood and all of us that lived there. I know he will be deeply missed. Barrie and I grew up in Norwood. He was just across the lane on Lyndale Drive, while we lived on Ashdale. We walked to school together to Nordale, later to Queen Elizabeth and then to Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. We taught swimming at the Sherbrook Pool every Monday for years. I will always remember one incident: I had my car towed one late night and when I went to pick it up a confrontation ensued. Two louts with tattoos accosted me and ended up beating me up, with watch dogs looking on! I paid my bill and went straight to the Winnipeg Police Station, to report the battering. How fortunate and relieved, I was, to find Barrie working a midnight shift! Relief at once poured over me with his empathy and understanding. He immediately treated my wounds and took the police report. It was so comforting to find a friend to attend to me through such a horrific experience. He was one of the first friends that I looked up at the Nordale and Nelson McIntyre School Re-unions. We stayed in touch for years after moving to Vancouver in 1992. In March, it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't heard from him in a while and phoned Linda, to say hi. She mentioned he was sleeping, and I wondered why he would be in bed in the middle of the afternoon. I now know why. I will always be sorry that I was not able to say goodbye. Barrie was a wonderful man. - Posted by: Terry Wilson (Good Friend) on: Apr 12, 2012

Shocking to learn of Barrie's demise. A baritone voice, a St. Boniface Cop, well respected who like many of us, became lost in the shuffle of amalgamation of Police. Rest in peace Barrie, and condolences to the family. - Posted by: Wally/Phyllis Rudnick (Brothers in BLUE, co-worker) on: Apr 11, 2012

Barrie was "Mr.Glen Ave". He never knew the word "no" whenever anyone asked him for a hand. We will all miss him deeply. Thinking of you Linda and the family often. Alice Neville - Posted by: Alice Neville (friend and neighbour) on: Apr 11, 2012

Barrie was one of those neighbors who you could count on for everything. Always giving up his time to help a friend in need. You could find him pumping water out of the many flooded yards, snowblowing the street sidewalks, or just stopping by with his sidekick for a short chat to see how things were. We will miss your presence "as the security" at our block parties. - Posted by: Roger & Lorie Gulay (Neighbor/friend) on: Apr 10, 2012

Barry was a great friend. He was always helpful. I knew Barry from the time I was a baby. He was part of our family for many years. He was my brother Bob's best childhood friend and spent summers with us at the cottage. We always had a great time. Barry was always cheerful. I will miss him. - Posted by: Donna Turcotte (Friend) on: Apr 10, 2012

Barrie was a member of the St Boniface Police Gun Club and was on many of the road trips we went on to compete. We always had a lot of fun at the shoots but on one especially memorable occasion, Barrie, long after the hotel pool was closed, herded some of our wives there and taught them to swim. "Stroke, Stroke, Stroke!" he could be heard commanding in his rich baritone, all the way down the hall to our rooms. Those were the days when the Police enjoyed a certain immunity from prosecution. God Love Ya, Barrie. - Posted by: Denis and Lulu Robert (Friend, co-worker) on: Apr 09, 2012
