Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBERNICE MARLING (nee KULIG) May 30, 1945 - May 4, 2012 Suddenly and unexpectedly Bernice Marling passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, May 4, 2012. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 45 years, Ken; her son Dwayne, daughter-in-law Pamela, and grandson Dominic; her daughter Shauna; her mother Marcella Kulig (Saskatoon); and her sister Leona and brother-in-law Dennis Klath (Saskatoon). She was predeceased by her father Roman Kulig in 1966. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and their families: Stella and Stafford Wagstaff (Calgary), Gene and Dan Marshall (Coronation, AB), Chris and Ken Woodkey (Calgary), Bob Marling (Baldwinton, SK), Jim Marling (Baldwinton, SK), Marilyn Brunett (North Battleford), Bill and Fedora Marling (Edmonton), Ron and Laurene Marling (Edmonton), Pat and John Nidish (Lloydminster, AB), Jack and Darlene Marling (Edmonton), Barb Marling (Lloydminster, SK), and Don and Janis Marling (Edmonton), and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and their spouses. Bernice was born in Saskatoon on May 30, 1945 to Roman and Marcella (Skwara) Kulig and raised in Bordon, SK where her father was a blacksmith. She was joined two years later by her sister Leona. Her's was a tight-knit Polish-Ukrainian household and included a large and loving extended family. She had many fond memories of spending time visiting her grandparents and uncles and aunts on their farms and spending time in the summer with the nuns in Saskatoon. Ken and Bernice first met in the summer of 1962 when he was working on a Saskatchewan Highways survey crew that was working its way east from North Battleford and she was waitressing at the local café. When he returned to college in Moose Jaw a raffle prize provided the excuse for correspondence to begin between them. The exchange soon led to a budding romance that was largely conducted by mail while Ken completed college and started working for Manitoba Hydro in Grand Rapids and she undertook her nursing training under the Grey Nuns at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, where she graduated with her RN in 1966. They were engaged at Christmas 1964 and married on October 8, 1966. Bernice and Ken built a home together in Saskatoon and their son Dwayne was born in July 1967. Manitoba Hydro lured them back to Manitoba where they moved to Gillam in June of 1968 to work on the Kettle Rapids Generating Station. Soon after their arrival in Gillam daughter Shauna was born in August 1968. While in Gillam, Bernice was employed at the Hospital where she did everything from working in the ER and on medical evacs, to the maternity ward and general duty nursing. Still with Manitoba Hydro, the family spent 1973-1974 in Jenpeg where Bernice worked in the nursing station. In 1974, in what proved to be their final move, they re-located to Winnipeg. In Winnipeg Bernice continued her nursing career where she developed an interest in geriatric medicine, completing her Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Manitoba and spending many years working as a visiting nurse and in nursing homes before retiring in the spring of 1992. Bernice and Ken spent a great deal of time together working on, renovating and improving their yard and home. Summers were spent camping and visiting family and friends around Saskatchewan and Alberta. Winters were spent traveling around the city for Dwayne's hockey and Shauna's volleyball and basketball. Bernice had the gift of making everyone she encountered feel comfortable, welcome and cared for; she loved entertaining family and friends from near and far in their home. Bernice and Ken were always very involved in their Church - undertaking marriage preparation for more than 20 years at Mary, Mother of the Church (Roman Catholic) Parish, serving on Parish Council together and being very actively involved in Worldwide Marriage Encounter for more than 30 years at both the local and national level. Bernice was also a long-time member of the Catholic Women's League. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in Mary, Mother of the Church (Roman Catholic) Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive with viewing one half hour before the service. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. also in Mary, Mother of the Church (Roman Catholic) Parish, with Fr. Kevin Bettens officiating. A private family interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation in Bernice's memory to Worldwide Marriage Encounter (c/o Robert and Michele Thurmeier, Box 114, Waskesiu Lake, SK, S0J 2Y0) or a charity of your choice. She will always be simply "B" to me. From the time I was a naked little boy in rubber boots knocking on her door with "B cookies, B" and falling alseep in the rocking chair in a mountain of crumbs and through all the support through University, even showing me how to iron. She will always have a very special place in my and my families hearts. - Posted by: Rob Dickinson (self apointed nephew) on: May 09, 2012
