ERNEST WALDEMAR FINGAS June 11, 1923 - May 5, 2012 On Saturday, May 5, Ernie died peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital, with family present. Ernie is survived by brothers Wilmer (Vicky) and Wilfred (Mildred), and sister-in-law Martha Fingas. He is also fondly remembered by his four children Betty-Ann Spencer, Wayne (Donna), Ron (Sally), Gerry (Cynthia), 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth, brother Arnold, and son-in-law Richard Spencer. Ernie was born on a farm near Inglis, MB to John and Amilda Fingas and was raised in a loving Lutheran household. At the age of 21, when he married Elizabeth, Ernie was given his own farm land by his parents. After several years of successful mixed farming, the family moved from the farm to Inglis to run a general store. Three years later, the store burned down and the family headed to Winnipeg where Ernie found employment with Winnipeg Transit. He started as a bus driver and then moved into the office to utilize his mathematical talents as a timekeeper. After a long career, Ernie retired allowing him to have more time to pursue his interests in golf and travelling with Elizabeth while she was able. Ernie enjoyed woodworking and ultimately turned into a very talented woodcarver in his 70s. Ernie also kept busy attending graduations, weddings, and confirmations as his legacy of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grew. Ernie was a founding member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and as he aged, it became a very important part of his spiritual and social life. As well, Ernie developed many good friends at Agape Villa and then at Cathedrale Manor, his final homes. The family would like to thank Dr. Guzman and all the staff of the Vascular Care unit at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassion and care of Ernie during his final weeks. A funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 930 Winakwa Road, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, or the charity of one's choice. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. We got to know Ernie after our move into Agape, at that time Elizabeth was ill and Ernie was faithfully and daily attending to her care. This was a demonstration of the kind of loving family man and faithful friend that Ernie that was. We found him to be exactly that and enjoyed our times with him very much. Happy journey Ernie. - Posted by: John & Marcy Schneider (Friend from Agape Villa) on: May 08, 2012
