I first met Hughie when he was an Assistant Manager at the old Portage & Carleton Store that was besides Eatons. I was sent there for a couple weeks relief work as a food clerk. One afternoon in the back room, I found out how strong Hugher was. There were a couple of large metal barrels that contained furnace cleaning products. One was full and Hughie put his arms around it and picked it up. The weight on it was over 300 pounds. No wonder any shoplifters didn't escape from his grip. Our paths closed many times and once you got to know him, he was a terrific person. He might have a stern look, but that turned to a warm smile once you started talking to him. Many years later, we both ended up working in the head office and had many coffee breaks together. I will miss his professionalism that he brought to the job and his years of friendship. - Posted by: colin dederick (fellow safeway employee) on: Oct 29, 2016
