SOPHIE PURCHASE April 19, 1921 - July 13, 2012 Peacefully, in the early morning of July 13, 2012, Sophie passed away with Gordon, her loving husband of more than 63 years, by her side. Sophie was born at home on Flora Ave. in Winnipeg on April 19, 1921, to parents that had emigrated from Poland. She grew up on farms in Saskatchewan and near Lundar, Manitoba. Sophie worked at Sanderson's Drugstore in the north end and later for many years in the jewelry department at The Bay downtown. On February 12, 1949, she married the love of her life, Gordon Purchase. His first jobs after their wedding took them away from Winnipeg. They loved to tell stories of the adventures they had living in those small towns. They were finally able to settle in a bungalow on Handyside in St. Vital. This was their home for 35 years. They enjoyed biking, fishing, blueberry picking, and cross country skiing together. When they sold the house, they stayed in the neighbourhood by moving into a high rise apartment building nearby. Here Sophie loved to watch the Canada Geese on the roof of the block across the street. She also loved to go on the bus that went to South Beach Casino for day trips with Gord. Her godson, nephew Chris and Joan accompanied them on many casino trips as well. You always knew she was feeling okay if she mentioned wanting to go there. The HalfMoon at Lockport was also a favourite destination, as was her niece Marnie and George's place near Gimli. Family was important to her, and she liked to keep in touch. Sophie was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Ted and Joe, sisters Vera and Dollie, and sister-in-law Mary. She is survived by her beloved husband Gord, her brother Walter, and sister-in-law Bernice. She also leaves many nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Aunt Soph. She truly was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. The family would like to express their thanks to the caring staff of 5B at St. Boniface Hospital. A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Donations in Sophie's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
