He leaves to mourn his wife of 39 years Cathy, his son Ernie, daughter Nancy, mother Athanasia, brother Steve (Voula), sister Jennie (Peter) and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews in Winnipeg, the U.S., and Greece. Nick was predeceased by his father Anastasios. Nick was born in Skoura, Lakonias, Greece on April 8, 1944 and immigrated to Winnipeg in January of 1961. He started working at Mrs. Mike's in 1967 and was joined by his brother Steve in 1969 when they bought the business. In the 45 years of working at Mrs. Mike's, Nick never missed a day of work, which showed his dedication and commitment, not only to his business, but also to his customers, turning Mrs. Mike's into a local landmark. After serving four generations of customers, he considered them to be not only customers but, friends. In 1973, Nick returned to Greece where he met and married his wife Cathy. They returned to Winnipeg where they began their life together. His pride and joy was his wife Cathy and their children. He was a devoted husband and father, who always put his family first. I started going to Mrs. Mike's back around 1968 and was worried when it changed hands. I needn't have worried - not only were the burgers and chips better, but the people were now the best. I will miss Nick, and my thoughts are with his family and friends. He put a smile (and chili) on so many in Winnipeg. - Posted by: Paul Smith (Calgary, Alberta) (long-time customer) on: Oct 17, 2012

I didnt know if his name was Nick or Steve so I always called him my yuh which I was told was Greek for my friend- I learned this as a 13 yr old working at the original juniors across from the CN station-the 1st non-Greek to work there. But the best burgers were on the other side of the Norwood Bridge at Mrs Mike's. Every year for 40 yrs I went there at least once and I don't know what amazed me more-the quality of the food or the quality of the people and how warm their greetings were-(hallo my frenn how are you-howz yor beezness in transcona) I had no idea they were brothers nor that the nice lady at the front there was married to one of them. not until today. The shoe repair guy across the street filled me in. It's amazing to see how many tributes are posted-how many people Mrs Mike's has touched over the years. Simple people-simple business-yet simply the best. An example so appreciated by so many. Farewell my friend. I remember the day Nick opened the glass sliding windows when he bought Mrs. Mikes from the Krawchuk family. I grew up 4 doors down from Mrs. Mikes and the day he opened for buisness, I and a few of my friends were there to greet him. Nick couldn't speak English very well and being the neighborhood punks we loved to tease and act like little hoodlums around our new hangout......Mrs. Mikes. Nick tried desperately to ignore our ridiculous attitude towards him and the customers. We were never really serious, just bored and looking for some fun and we thought Nick was it. What a bunch of punks we were! Some days we would be peeling potatoes for a burger and drink and other days, Nick would be chasing us down the street with a broom. We all thought it was pretty funny, even Nick eventually got a kick out of us or should I say caught one of us and kicked our asses. I look back on it now and think to myself....we were a bunch of idiots just looking to cause trouble and at someone else's expense. Years passed by very quickly and we grew up a little...foolish kids, very foolish!Nick and I developed a friendship, even though I moved out of the area, I always stopped in for my favorite....double cheese burger, extra pickles. I didn't even have to order, he knew what I wanted. The last few years when I stopped by for a burger for some reason, we started calling each other "CHARLIE" Hey Charlie, how's it going...fine! fine! fine!, and then we both would laugh! He always took time to chat with me,even when he was busy, Cathy would give us both that look, you would know what I'm talking about if Cathy ever gave you that look, then she would smile. She is a very nice lady! Well today, I stopped by for my usual fav. and asked Cathy where is Charlie? Her eyes started to tear and she said.."didn't you hear what happened to Nick"? Right at that split second, I saw a picture of Nick on the counter behind her and it felt like someone hit me from behind. Cathy reached out and took my hand and said Nick passed away. I was stunned. Cathy tried desperatley to hold back the tears....it almost made me cry seeing the hurt that poor dear lady was feeling. There was a lineup behind me of people trying to quickly get their orders in and Cathy and myself are standing there looking at each other holding hands with tears in our eyes. They must of wondered what the hell is going on here. When I got home, I looked up Nick Mikos's obituary and I wasn't surprised at all the comments made on his behalf. I am sure going to miss my buddy "Charlie" I have a world of respect for Cathy. That lady loves her man and he will be sadly missed! Every time I would leave his shop I would say..." See you later Charlie and he would say "Stay out of trouble OK Gary"?..... I'll try Charlie, no promises! Good bye my Friend! - Posted by: Gary Zeolkowski (Friend and Customer) on: Aug 09, 2012

I was out of town and did not learn of the sad news. I have been going to Mrs. Mikes since Nick and Steve began. Nick was always friendly and cheerful. Once he knew your name he would greet you whether getting food or just stopping to talk. Both my daughters grew up hearing about their great food and friendly faces. My deepest sympathy to Nick's family. Now heaven has the best burgers too.!! - Posted by: Roger Lapointe (Long time friend & customer(WPS retired)) on: Aug 07, 2012

We always find ourselves waiting every spring for Mrs. Mike's to open...I often found myself just as happy to enjoy the friendly smile and wave with quick conversation as much as I was in getting the best burger in Winnipeg... My deepest condolences to Steve & family on that passing of Nick. HE WILL DEFINITELY BE MISSED. I will always remember Nick preparing dozens & dozens of burgers & meals to his customers, and he truly looked like he loved what he did. He served me as a kid, and even to his last times at Mrs. Mikes, he served my four children. My kids were also saddened to hear that one of Mrs. Mikes family had passed on. Nick & Steve Always remembered my name, and greeted me always pleasantly. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May he Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Norbert Dupas (Customer) on: Jul 31, 2012

My deepest sympathies to Steve, Cathy, Family and friends of Nick. To Nick's children thank you for sharing your father with all of us. I have been going to Mrs. Mikes for over 40 years. Although I moved to Edmonton 12 years ago, everytime I came to Winnipeg my family and I would stop for King Burgers at least a few times during our visit. In fact anyone who came to visit us in Edmonton would HAVE to bring us some King Burgers. I compare Mrs Mikes to the TV Show CHEERS "When Everyone Knows Your Name". Nick, Steve and Cathy always welcomed me by name everytime. Not only do you have the best burgers in Canada, you are also the best people. I'm sorry for your loss. Nick you made a difference in many peoples lives by just being you. Nick I will miss you. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who loved Nick. I moved to winnipeg in 1998 and one of the first things I was introduced to in the city by my wife was Mrs. Mikes! Needless to say I was instantly hooked to the best burgers ever! But more importantly I was also introduced to some of the most dedicated and kindhearted people working there. And of course Nick was one of those people who always took the time to ask how I was doing regardless of how busy he might have been. I know this family well enough to know that this is a terrible loss to all of them. I cannot thank this family enough for their compassion when I was dealing with a sick Mom & how they always ask about my family when I am there - always thinking of others. Add to that, the best Hamburgers in the World & it's a purr-fect fit. Nick will no doubt be missed by many. Thinking of you all, especially Cathy & Steve.
