VALENTINA FRANCA CORVINO Valentina Franca Corvino, born October 29, 1925 in Tolmezzo, Italy, passed away August 21, 2012 while surrounded by her two sons, her daughter-in-law, and her many grandchildren who loved her. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfio, in 1972 and her great-granddaughter Brittany; she is with them now. She was always known as Franca, and this was because of her honest nature. We always knew exactly what was on her mind and what her beliefs were. She loved nothing more than to sit with her children and friends and to share in a glass of wine and a story. Over the years she inspired us all with her stories of being involved in the resistance during the Second World War, and we all regard her for the hero that she was. She could be frustrating because of her stubborn nature, but it is only because the strength of her determination was such a guiding force in her life. She never backed away from a challenge. She took on the Nazis during the war, and that strength of character carried her through her 80s and helped her be unafraid in the end. Franca taught her family the power of hard work, determination, and most of all, the power found through compassion. She is survived by her sons, Eddy and Valentino; her daughters-in-law, Shelley and Marcela; her multitude of grandchildren: Christine (husband Todd), Rick (and wife Alyson), Tony, Anna (and husband Brian), Danial, Alfio (and wife Julia), Cavan (and wife Ashley), Aaron, Jennie (and her fiancé George), and Patrick; her many great-grandchildren: Lauren, Logan, Nicholas, Alissa, Katy, Lily, Eliza, Aurora, Isabella, and Olivia; and her long-time friend and companion, Toni Basso. She has much family in Italy that will also miss her. Our greatest sadness is that she will no longer be with us to offer her wise counsel, her sharp insight, or to help us all raise our families in the same way she raised us all: with love, discipline, and the use of her polenta stick. She was much-beloved, much-admired, and will always be missed. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for charities which support education programs for under-privileged children as per Franca's wishes.
