DAVID ANTHONY (TONY) BUTT
Date of Passing: Aug 22, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAVID ANTHONY (TONY) BUTT September 12, 1963 - August 22, 2012 Unexpectedly, on Wednesday evening, Tony was taken from us while enjoying his passion, flying. Tony was born in Badger, N.L. and spent his first 12 years in that area. As a child, Tony moved often with his family due to his father's banking profession. No matter where Tony landed, he quickly made friends and got involved with his many hobbies, which included tormenting his little sisters, wrestling, hunting, soccer, dog showing/ training and flying ultra-light airplanes. Most of his teens were spent in Brandon, MB. He graduated from Vincent Massey High School and with Honours from Brandon University, with a Science degree (physcology, geology and geography). During these years, Tony found time to take his beloved dog Dusty to become the Top Obedience Dog in Canada. He also found a lot of time for hijinks. After university, Tony worked as a geologist and had many stories to tell of his days tramping around in the Canadian wilderness, prospecting for gold. He eventually moved to Winnipeg and landed a job in sales. He quickly moved into Pharmaceutical sales, which he became passionate about. It also truly suited his social butterfly personality. While Tony's family was growing up he put flying aside. He spent weekends camping and boating at Westhawk Lake. He was never happier than watching the 'biscuit smile' on people's faces as he careened them around the lake. The boy's smiles were the ones he loved the most. Tony, being talented athletically, excelled at all sports that he tried - skiing, soccer and many others. His favorite was playing soccer competitively and his team competed nationally, but his true love for the game was brought to light when he started coaching his boys. As a coach (Dakota and Bonivital Flames), he took his team to city and provincial championships. He also got them to the Nationals twice. He didn't just teach them soccer though. For him it was so much more than that. He loved every one of them and watched over them. He taught them life skills and hoped he gave them the tools necessary to guide them towards becoming good men. Tony's dream was to enter the Air Force after high school and become a fighter pilot. This was not to be, Tony's hearing didn't pass their stringent tests. As you can see, Tony didn't let that stop him from pursuing his flying passion. Once his boys were grown, he turned his attention back to flying. He quickly obtained his private and commercial licenses. Tony flew every chance he got. Saturdays he would be up at Gimli's Jump Zone, taking parachuters up. Sundays he would be at Starbuck towing glider planes. He just couldn't get enough. He was happiest when he was flying aerobatics. His current project (aside from building our deck - he was also a talented carpenter), was getting his aerobatics teaching license. Tony had plans for the future - he had so many things that he wanted to do. One very special thing he was looking forward to was at some time becoming a grandfather. After spending time with Grayden, he was bitten by the 'grandpa bug' - but all in good time boys ;-). Tony was predeceased by his parents, Dave and Ruby. He leaves to mourn his passing, his sons, Brandt and Kevin, wife Heather, sisters Cindy and Karen, Mum Patience, sister-in-law Heidi, brothers-in-law Rob and Rocky, many nieces and nephews and many many friends. Tony, YOU are my love, my friend, my partner, my diamond-in-the-rough and quite literally, the wind in my sails. We will both miss and love you forever. SLYH To all of our friends, neighbors and family who have been here for Brandt, Kevin and me - THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING! Tony's Funeral Service will be Friday, August 31 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made toward Alzheimer's, Diabetes, the Humane Society or any charity of your choosing. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Heather, Brandt and Kevin: Although I have never met you I know of you through Tony, I worked with Tony at Novartis and as guys will do, we kept in touch from a distance. Tony was a wonderful person through whom I found inspiration. He was an entrepreneur, aviator, athlete and coach. Most of all he spoke highly of you, his family. I have rarely met someone speak so passionately of his family. Tony leaves a great legacy. I will miss him. I wish you great strength and courage. - Posted by: Denis Lapierre (friend and colleague) on: Oct 22, 2012

Heather, Brandt and Kevin; Our sincerest condolences to you and your family. Tony was a hospitable (lobster boil anyone?) passionate, sincere, empathetic, witty and humourous individual with too many talents to list. He was a mentor to me from the day he took me under his wing at Novartis training and quickly became a continual source of advice for me personally and professionally. He was an exceptional man, a great friend, father and family man who shall be missed dearly. All who knew him are better for it. Our deepest and most sincere condolences, Gord and Sofia Clunie - Posted by: Gord Clunie (Friend, Novartis Associate) on: Sep 04, 2012

I worked with Tony in Brandon as we both went to Vincent Massey. We worked together one summer at Simplot chemicals, many years ago. Heather, David and Brandt, Deepest condolences from me and our congregation, Grace Community Church. Over the years of building his business next to our church Tony stopped by my office several times for coffee and great conversations. Most often our talk turned to our mutual enjoyment of soccer. Tony was so encouraging to my son Andrew who plays soccer for Portage Trail. He even took time out of his busy schedule to come and watch one of my son's games. Andrew and I will never forget and will always appreciate Tony's willingness to share his time, knowledge of and passion for soccer. I will miss the coffees and conversations. May your days be filled with all the best of memories of your husband and father. Sincerely, Scott Gillingham - Posted by: Scott Gillingham (Pastor of Grace Community Grace) on: Aug 27, 2012

Please accept my condolences. I was privileged to pull on the same jersey as Tony for seven years in total and remember him as the most passionate and committed teammate imaginable. He never backed down from an opponent, no matter how big. He was tireless and seemingly indestructible, so much so that I am astonished that he has left us in this way. I will remember summer evenings in his company, kicking a ball around a schoolyard with Dusty in hot pursuit. Tony was a factory original. - Posted by: Jim Cooper (former teammate) on: Aug 27, 2012
