JOHN FREDERICK HICKEY 1923 - 2012 We are saddened to announce the passing of our Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather John Hickey. Dad died September 3, 2012 in Concordia Hospital. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Viola, his parents George and Esther, and siblings Gilbert, Walter, Les and Audrey. Dad is survived by his children Sharon (Bob), Walter (Linda), Donna (Terry), Bev (Dave), Pam and Patrick (Lisa); grandchildren Sean, Susan, Walter (Angela), Jonathan, Calvin (Jennifer), Jillian, Emily, Tom, Alysha, Sarah and Sam; great-grandchildren Taylor, Jenna, Ethan, Janelle and John. He is also fondly remembered by sisters-in-law Judy, Peggy and Donalda and many nieces and nephews. Family was very important to Dad and he had a special place in his heart for each member. He never forgot a birthday or a family special event. Dad long considered himself a proud member of Elmwood where he was born and lived his entire life. He was often referred to as the unofficial mayor of Elmwood. He was very active in sports where he cultivated many lifetime friends. He attended George V Elementary School and graduated from St. John's Tech. He served overseas in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. At this time he tragically lost his mentor and big brother Walter. Dad was recently honoured by Elmwood Legion #9 as one of its longest surviving members. Dad retired from the Winnipeg Post Office after 30 years of service and continued to this day to meet with retired Royal Railway Mail workers for monthly luncheons. Dad spent many wonderful summers at his favourite retreat at Toniata Beach on Falcon Lake where he and Mom developed many lifetime friends. He loved the outdoors and cross country skiing and hiking in Bird's Hill Park was his way of connecting with nature and the beauty it offered. There are many stories associated with Dad's fishing trips with his sons, sons-in-law and fishing buddies Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society. You were a once in a life time Dad for which we all say Thank you. We love you Dad. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery Crematorium, 1800 Day Street. I will always have the fondest memories of both Mr. and Mrs. Hickey; particularly the summer months at Falcon Lake, Chinese Dinners Sunday nights as we all crowded into the living room. Any one who walked into the Hickey home and took a seat at the kitchen table was always greeted with a genuine smile from Mr. Hickey. You will be sadly missed but always remembered with a smile. - Posted by: Cathryn Paterson (Family Friend) on: Oct 19, 2012

I got to know John, when he moved into Concordia Village this past year. He was a kind and gentle soul who, although he sometimes had trouble seeing me, would recognise my voice and always had a resounding "Hi Terrol !" for me. I was saddened to find he had passed away when I returned from vacation. I will forever hear his cheerful "Hi Terrol !" when I walk past his apartment door and all of us at Concordia Village will miss him. Please accept my condolances.
