MARIE EMILIE CARNEY (nee SOUYRI) It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother at Trilake Health Centre on September 6, 2012 at the age of 97 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Peter (Ann), Deanna (Morris) Hoshowski, Suzanna, Paul (Sheila), Patrick (Lis); grandchildren Sean (Jackie), Marc, Stephen (Carol), Meagan, Emilie; great-grandchildren Daniel and Sydney, nieces Joyce Tervoort, Joanne Souyri, Debra Scott, nephew Benoit Souyri and cousin Denis Souyri (Toulouse, France). She was predeceased by her husband Norbert, her parents Marc and Emilie Souyri, and her brothers Joseph (Gilberte), Henri (Kay) and Louis. Born in Dunrea on March 24, 1915, she lived her entire 97 years in Dunrea, always content with the rural life of a small village as lived by her ancestors for hundreds of years in southern France. As a young girl she attended l'Ecole Sacre Coeur where she enjoyed participating in school plays and piano recitals. At a very young age she helped her brothers deliver milk and cream to regular customers where she developed a strong work ethic that she maintained throughout her life and that she passed on to her children. After grade school she spent a number of years working at the local restaurant, owned by George and Anna Fortier. It was at this time that she learned the art of decorating wedding cakes. In 1937 she married Norbert Carney. The next 72 years were dedicated to making a home, raising her family and contributing to the community. She also worked as Housekeeper at the rectory and the Dunrea Medical Clinic and as caretaker at the school. She belonged to the Ladies of Ste. Anne, the Catholic Women's League and the Riverside New Horizons Centre, and, for many years she helped with church teas and the annual Fowl Suppers. Cooking and baking were a natural for our mother. Special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries were always marked with a special cake. Visitors were always welcome at the dinner table where her delicious home baked food was always served and enjoyed. Some of her other interests included entering (and winning) many competitions at the Ninette Fair, wine-making, music, gardening, dancing to old time favorites, attending fiddling competitions and going to the occasional auction sale. She was also an avid collector of Royalty memorabilia, bells (dozens) and spoons (hundreds). After Dad retired in 1977 they travelled, making numerous trips to Calgary and Parry Sound and one long trip to California. In 1985 she travelled to France with her daughter Suzanna and in 1990 she took another trip to France with Deanna and Paul. During these trips she met many relatives and stayed with her cousin Denis who came to visit us in Canada in 2004. Our family wishes to thank the Home Care workers who helped with her care over the past years and who made it possible for her to remain in her home till June, 2012. We would also like to thank the medical and nursing staff at the Trilake Health Centre in Killarney who provided her with excellent care over the years and especially during the last two months. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Felix Church, Dunrea with Father Philip Malayil officiating. Burial will follow immediately at St. Felix cemetery. In memory of Marie Emilie Carney donations may be made to the Trilake Health Centre. Killarney Boissevain Funeral Home Ltd. www.wheatlandfs.com
